Thought that the Galaxy S would play divx and avi no problems, but wont seem to recognise them.
Do I need to download some extra codecs from somewhere or am I barking up the wrong tree ?
Any help would be greatly appeciated :)

It should play, but bear in mind that avi is just a container name, so not everything that say avi will play on your phone. For start try samsung demos that are listed on this forum in Video section.

As the previous post points out, avi is just a container that holds audio and video.
These can be encoded using many algorithms.
You can download a program such as gspot that will analyse the video and tell you what it has been encoded with.
You'll hopefully find that it is not divx/xvid or any of the supported formats and therefore the reason that it's not playing.
As for installing additional codecs, I'm not sure if this is possible?
Is there maybe a movie app that supports more codecs than the stock player?
Edit: You can get gspot from here: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/index.htm
i use mediainfo, some divx avi will not play because of 2 additional settings that are turned on, just get mkv version i possible, galaxy s eats them up!
