Hey guys,
i dived in this whole rooting thing since a got my S2 2 weeks ago.
I found some videos on youtube which showed how you break with "Gingerbreak".
All text based tutorials i found was about Odin.
What is the difference between that two?
Are there more solutions out there?
Is it important to have a special firmware?
And the one question which took me long with the iPod Touch: Which group is the one to follow so you get informed about new firmware rootings and stuff? Who "invented" that stuff?
I'd glad to hear from you :)

Instead of 'breaking' we 'flash'.
Odin is the program used to manually flash/berak new firmware(system software) on to the phone. To flash any systemsoftware on the phone you have to use Odin/Heimdall (Heimdall may work better on Macs).
Gingerbread is a version of Android System Software.
Read the dictionary in the new user section if you have any problems with terminology.

I did not mean "Gingerbread" which i know is the OS.
GingerBREAK is what i meant and it is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga__L6Mwxfs ;)

Best way to root is flash a new kernel using odin. Have a look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) for tooting and here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) for stock firmwares for debranding. Also some good reading in there and the first thread is by chainfire on rooting and most custom firmwares will include his rooted kernel in them so this is probably what you're looking for to keep up to date. Also if you look around the rest of that forum you should learn a lot, maybe too much than is healthy :)

checked out the you tube video....although it says Gingerbreak any device, it also says DroidX at the end.
From what I understand it's not as easy as one program breaks all gingerbread. There are so many versions of gingerbread.
Stick to this Forum, if you need help with anything to do with Samsung Galaxys people will jump at the chance.

Jump Jump Jump.
Well I look at the video first, but God that voice, what did I do to deserve that. Back to sacrificing more kittens so that doesn't happen again:)
Also I agree with what Tufftoad said:)
