From androidcentral.com

* Step 1 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"
* Step 2 -- Open the dialer (the phone button) and enter the following: *#*#1472365#*#* . Then press "send" to open the Vibrant's LbsTestMode menu.
* Step 3 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Based.”
* Step 4 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, find “SUPL/CP Settings” and change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 (DO NOT use www. in front of supl !)
* Step 5 -- Reboot your phone.
* Step 6 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Check the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"

If you want to reverse these changes, the original specs are:

Operation Mode: Standalone
SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com
PORT: 7275

This worked for me if im standing still.

Got many locks but as soon as I get in the car and hit 30+ it just cannot keep up.

Motorway is when it gets turned off.

Still useless.....

I read this during the week and was pretty disappointed but couldn't test due to living near work and not driving during the week but today got in the car and drove roughly 5miles city 15miles motorway 10miles country then another 5 city using google navigator.

In the city the lock seemed perfect always knew exactly where i was no problems. Motorway a little jumpy i guess but at worst it displayed me 100-150m behind my current location not ideal but very very useable country roads with not great reception also seemed fine. Right now im very happy with the gps not perfect by any means but today i was on roads i didn't know(had the Garmin in the glove box just incase) and got me to the door of the house i was traveling too.

Google navigate even shows you the street view of the destination when you arrive!

I’ve gave this a try and found it inconclusive, but there may be a slight improvement as things fluctuating all the time. I used GPS Test and it seemed to find about the same no of satellites, with about three or four in use, but fluctuating all the time.

This fix was also posed here:

http://www.intomobile.com/2010/07/21/t-mobile-samsung-vibrant-galaxy-s-gps-issues-fix-tutorial/

Some interesting feedback, seems about a 50/50 split as to whether it works or not. Also this other fix posted there, which I tried, but didn’t seem to help:

1. From Standalone to MS Based
2.Sky hook from off to ON
3. SUPL/CL Settings set server to AUTO

However, after playing around with these, I went to change it back to the original settings and I hit the Clear All GPS Data button by mistake. All seemed fine, but the next time I changed it, the GPS would not work at all. No Satellites in GPS Test. And the satellite indicator icon doesn’t come on when using google maps.

I had another look this morning and all was working well, but again, but after changing things a few times, it again stopped working with any of the settings.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Also, is there an app that will work like GPS Test, but keep a record of the results over a period of time and calculate averages, show results on a graph etc? This would greatly assist any testing process, rather than me just keeping an eye on the screen the whole time.

HELP!!!!

My GPS is now not working at all whichever of these settings i use. I don't know whether the fact that i hit Clear All GPS Data is responsible or not, but it looks like the phone doesn't even try to connect to GPS. I get no satellite icon in maps, no satellites found (not even grey ones) in GPS Test.

Hopefully there's an easy solution to this?

I know it is not much a help but the last thing you can try is to backup all your apps and do a factory reset.

Yes, could try that. Does this mean i'll have to start all over again with setting up email etc?

Funnily enough, after a day and half it has started working again, just like it did last time it played up. Since then though my 3G has been a bit hit & miss.

Edit: I realise now that the 3G problem was across the Orange network, so not connected to this GPS issue.
