On SGSII 2.3.3 in "Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> Data roaming" one can turn of data usage while the phone is roaming. I cannot find many posts/articles that would say whether this switch does its job or not. I have SGSII for some weeks and I have the "Data roaming" set to off. Recently I roamed into a foreign net, the 3G/H connection icon is not shown, I see the R GSM icon (roaming). However my call meter app (Call meter 3G) says that some data was transferred while in roaming. I cannot confirm this yet as I do not have the latest bill from my carrier yet.

Is the "Data roaming" switch reliable? Does it do it's job? (Or can the apps circumvent this?)
Is there a "proper/guaranteed/tested" way to disable data roaming while still having packet data turned on (to enable MMS service which also uses packet data)? I know of APNDroid, is it reliable?
Or is the only guaranteed option to turn off packet data completely?

it does work, but I had some problems, see...

since returning to UK, no more problems

I updated to the new firmware a couple of weeks ago, was originally somethingDD, now E7, will be travelling again shortly so hoping the problem is resolved now

Rasto, please update us when you get your bill. Data costs abroad are horrendous, so I'd like to know for sure that my weather widget isn't bringing me updates to my home town weather whilst I'm wandering elsewhere in the world. ;)

Right. So up until now I see no roaming data transfer registered with my carrier, so the "Data roaming" switch seems to do its job.

One option is that CallMeter 3G got it wrong. Strange though, I know that there are problems to register each and every transfer but I did not hear that it would register something not transferred at all.

According to what I saw, there was a ~ 12M upload and a 300K download registered by CallMeter 3G while I was roaming. If it was that way, I would be just wondering what and why would the phone send that was not accounted as roaming data then.

Phew, that's a relief. :) Thank you!
