: [Review] Official MHL adaptor from Samsung

Ok so I finally got my hands on an MHL adaptor or HDTV Adaptor as Samsung like to call it. With this little adaptor you can connect your Galaxy S2 up to your TV and display you movies and everything on the phones screen to your TV.

So this basically turns your SGS2 into a media player. Its great for showing off recorded videos on your HD TV or using it to play movies.

I played a few full 1080p trailers and they look amazing on the TV. As if you were using a dedicated player to watch them.

The cable itself doesn't run without a power source. So you need to plug your adaptor into the adaptor to power it. I can also confirm that the USB cable will work too. Its a little disappointing that it doesn't work just by itself.

Using this the phone will then beep and display the SGS2's screen on your TV via HDMI. It seems that the power needed to display the video over HDMI is so much that even if a charging is connected and charging. You will slowly loose battery life. If your phone is charged already you will have plenty of juice for a few movies. If your on 20% battery it may pay to charge your phone first if you aiming to play a full length movie.

Where I brought the cable was from here: Galaxy S2 MHL adaptor (http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/genuine-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-mhl-adaptor-p29427.htm)

Over all I'm pleased with the cable and will come in handy.

Turn's your SGS2 into a media player, jukebox and even game console!
Great for viewing photos and videos recorded on the phone.
With a bluetooth mouse and keyboard you have yourself a PC browser experiance.

Power is need either via the adaptor or USB cable. With decreases its portability somewhat. (Unless your TV is so new it has a new powered MHL ready HDMI port)

Is there any way to get sound out of these other than throught he HDMI? (does it have a breakout halfway down for a 3.5mm or SPDIF?)

I use a Projector at home for my TV and my AMP is just for sound via SPDIF (it doesn't have HDMI) so I would have to use the speaker of the phone OR the projector, neither of which are very good quality or go loud enough.

Just got my able

Just got my Samsung official HDMI cable. Using it now. It's good but with the power cable as well it is a bit cumbersome. The official price is steep, I believe there is a cheaper alternative on www.mobilefun.co.uk

Yeah, I ordered the cheaper version last week, and just heard from mobilefun that they have shipped it this morning.

As an aside, I have a N8 which came with various cables, one of which allows me to play HD material on my 46" bravia TV without having phone power attached. Strange that the SG2 needs power connection. cheers FW

Mine's just been dispatched as well. I think needing power is part of the MHL standard and new tv's will supply the power through the cable to charge the phone while playing vids. So in the distant future with you new television it will all be good ;)

Charger into mhl cable, hdmi into mhl and into tv and it should work.

Is it possible to use the mhl adapter to allow video conferencing on a large screen TV? The camera and mic could handle my end of the call and the TV could supply the picture and sound from the other end.

I can't see any reason why not, in fact that seems like an ideal use for it.

what a pity! my tv did not support hdmi!!!!

Hi guys.
I got the official Samsung MHL adaptor today from play.com.
I've followed the instructions to the letter, but I'm getting a blank screen on my Toshiba full HD tv.
Everything is plugged in, the MHL adaptor, the USB charger and the HDMI cable. The HDMI cable works fine if I connect my laptop to the tv so it's not that. The phone is showing that it's charging so the MHL adaptor is carrying power, so why the blank screen?
Do I need to enable TV out on my phone? If so, I can't find where that setting is. My S2 is on O2 in the UK and my settings screen has separate Sound and Display menus, none of which offer a 'TV out' option.

Sounds like a faulty adpator as it should just work when all connected up. No need to go digging through menus.

09-23-2011, 11:58 AM
Have you tried under Menu > Settings > display?

Yes. I have the following options in Menu>Settings>Display on my S2:

Screen Display
Background Effect
Auto-Rotate Screen
Screen time-out
Touch key light duration
Auto adjust screen power
Horizontal calibration
Gyro sensor calibration

I can't find TV out in any of these options.
Unless... does it only show up once the MHL is connected to the phone? It isn't connected just now.

I deleted the post, missed the last bit which said you checked under the display bit :)

I will check a mates options but Joey may be right. Although the MHL adaptor could be carrying a power supply one of the other connectors which carries the audi/visual may be damaged.

Ideally testing another MHL adaptor would be the best option, could you do this in shop?

I have neither the apaptor or the SGSII....still on SGS :(

I bought it online from play.com, so unfortunately no.
The tiny manual (seriously - did they get these printed in Lilliput?) mentions that the TV must support Anynet+ for the adaptor to work properly.
This wasn't mentioned anywhere on the website when I bought it. I don't even know what Anynet+ is! When I connect the adaptor to my Toshiba Regza TV, the tv recognises that something is there, as it shows 'Regza-Link' on the appropriate HDMI input. But that's all. No signal, no home screen, no videos.

Don't forget you need to use the power charger not the USB

hey people.
i got one of these official samsung mhl to hdmi adapters. it works in the sense that the phones screens shows up on the tele vision but as soon as its connected the phones screen becomes very laggy and unresponsive.i am unable to change between screen or select items. when i unplug the hdmi cable from the screen it works again immediatly.
does it sound like a faulty hdmi cable or can it be even though that the phones screen is shown up on the television?
any help would really be appreciated as ive searched online and although some people have problems with the television screen going blank when its plugged in nobody has this problem

It should be exactly as using the phone normally but on the tv, have you got the usb power lead plugged in?

I recently used it a lot for watching films while away on the hotel tv and it really is good.

i have connected the charger to the adapter and the hdmi cable and the phone charges correctly so there is no problem there as well as the touch screen works. the problem arises when i plug the hdmi cable into the tv. then the screen becomes very laggy initially and then unresponsive. the phones display is on the tv screen alright but i wonder is there something else i can do?i am going to try and different hdmi cable this evening but does anybody have any other suggestions?
