: Headset very quiet on calls, any ideas?

I mentioned it in the bugs thread but since it's my biggest issue with an amazing phone I thought I'd put the question out there:

Does everybody else find phone calls too quiet when using a plugged in headset?
And
Is there a solution to this one?

Music can go loud, so the hardware can clearly drive the speakers but phone calls are very quiet even on max volume. I have the current firmware (updated through Kies).

Thanks!

I must admit I haven't tried the headset (Still in it's wrapper) but try the AudioManager app from the Market. It has a nice widget for virtually all the volume controls you have.

That seemed to work, though I'm pissed at having to buy all sorts of 3rd party apps to do what my $1200 phone can't!! (New Zealand Dollars that is)

Okay, my mistake - it didn't work.
If I restart the phone it seems louder, but must get quiet after doing...well somthing. Max volume is still pitiful :(

Can anyone else try plugging in their headset to see if they get the same on calls? Thanks!

Nope, I have no problems although I wish I could make it a bit louder on some calls:)

I hope its not the other end using a bluetooth headset or them moving a way from the mic:)

Try this...worked for me...

Dialer *#*#197328640#*#*
[5] AUDIO
[1] HANDSET
[1] VOLUME
[1] SRC Speech RX Volume
[5]5_lvl : 88
Menu -> Key Input
Change to any number greater than 88 (Max:100)
OK

Press back to save.

Default values:
0_lvl: 63
1_lvl: 68
2_lvl: 73
3_lvl: 78
4_lvl: 83
5_lvl: 88

Only problem with this is that it resets back to default when you turn your phone off.

Using the Samsung Galaxy S Forum found this solution which is as above plus an extra step and critically instructions on exiting out of the service mode menu using menu-back so as to ensure your new settings are saved.

Hi Guys

i REFER TO : while on headset, incoming call very soft or low BUT music playing just perfect.
actually, it does not really help if we maximise the media volume, it is still terribly unacceptable.

It is confirmed NOW that we can adjust this flaw (hope they fix it up soon with a new bios upgrade) by using the

<<<courtesy of Trev (eforum team)>>>
Enter this number *#*#197328640#*#* ON YOUR PHONE KEYPAD
This will open the service mode menu.
Select option [5] AUDIO
Select option [1] NB (VOICE CALL)
Select option [2] HEADSET
Select option [1] Volume
Select option [1] SRC Speech RX Volume
Select option [5] 5_lvl : 87

--> click it and it asks for INPUT
--> here you can change to 100 (that is the maximum)
{ to enter the number, press the "menu" key and choose "key input". After you have entered your number, you MUST use the MENU--->choose BACK}
{never never use our usual "go back" U-TURN key on the right hand side - it will not save your data}
--> Just 1 back will do because we need to set 3 more items.

Next goto [5]Sidetone : 0x0
it asks for input. goto MENU-->KEY INPUT and enter 35 (that is ideal but some prefer 32).
This one it auto go back to the previous page
NEXT DO THE SAME FOR [6]I2s1 Rx Gain
repeat the process above and enter 35
NEXT [7] I2S1 GAIN :
repeat the process above and enter 35

NEXT COMES THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO SAVE IT
Use the MENU-->SELECT BACK..and repeat MENU-->BACK (continuously until you reached the PHONE KEYPAD). Now your data is saved.
* you dont need to reboot the set.
** if you goback to the SERVICE MENU, you will see that [5], [6] and [7] will be back to 0 AGAIN!!! no idea why. However, if you do not enter into the individual item, it still remembers the last input. If however, if for some reason, it has adopted "0", then you will find that other side cannot hear you and neither can you hear the other side, while with your HEADSET ON.
DONT PANIC!!!!. repeat the steps above and remember to use MENU--BACK AND REPEAT ALL THE WAY TO THE KEYPAD

good luck..until we have a permanent software BIOS fix from samsung (i hope they do it fast before it affects their IMAGE!!!!)

I spoke to Samsung in Australia last week (31 August) and they said they had just found out about this complaint a few hours before I called and that they will be working on a patch. No ETA was provided, of course.

I tried what whizzkid has suggested and EVERYTIME the settings goto 0 and I can no longer hear anyone and they cannot hear me. I have followed the steps correctly. How can I get this back to how it was?

Ignore this post

Note - do not use a big ar$e pair of DJ earphones when trying the test - stick to the original earphones that you will normally use

Hy guys, maybe this issue (I'm facing, too) is related with swap of mic/groud wires in jack. Actually, O have a headset that's unusable for calling and hearing musing, and works well when plugged in Galaxy S (that has a different wirking). Does it make sense?

@tesis52 Galaxy S had the old wiring system - S2 uses the new system (same as iPhone). If you use the headset that came with your S2 you won't have any problems.... This only applies if the headset has the ability to answer calls etc ie has a mic in it. Any other "music only" headphones don't matter.....

Hi guys,

I'm having the same problem using Etymotic HF3 headset - they're touted as being iPhone compliant so goes some way against Rich's comment above. Volume listening to music is perfect, in call it's way too low and I can barely hear the caller but they can hear me fine. Am questioning the wiring being issue as surely they wouldn't work as normal with just music?

Will try the fix mentioned above and let you know if I have any joy.

My friend had the exact same issue and he was told that the audio jack had some loose connections and got it corrected. If u feel bad after trying all the steps u know, just get it to the shop where u got it. May be they can help you fix it bigwilk

I've changed the settings that Whizzkid laid out, however I'm now getting horrendous echo at both ends of the call, both using the handset and the headset. What were the default settings before as the echo isn't worth a slight increase in headset volume. Any help would be really appreciated as I can't now use the phone for calls properly. Cheers.

For me 100 is not the highest value. 150 is working even better. Have nice day
