: [SGS II] Switching off Camera Shutter noise

SO pleased with my Galaxy S ii but one niggle is there is no option on camera settings to switch off the camera shutter noise. I have done some research online and found following:

[COLOR="blue"]Trick 1:

First create a file "local.prop" in /data/ if it doesn't exist. Eg: "/data/local.prop"
Then open the file "/data/local.prop"
Now add the line to the file:
Code:
ro.camera.sound.forced

Finally reboot and all sound in the camera app is silent.
To recover the sound, you can either delete the local.prop file or change the code to:
Code
ro.camera.sound.forced=1

Trick 2:

unrar the attached file "local.prop.rar"
Then copy the "local.prop" file to your ADB folder
ADB push local.prop /data/local.prop
Reboot phone.
To restore sound, just delete local.prop and reboot
........

How do I actually get access to the "files" they mention on the phone? Do I need to connect it to my p.c to do it?
Is it safe to do these procedures anyway?

Cheers. Andy

with the camera open click on the cog icon, click on the spanner icon, scroll to shutter sound, there are 4 options, one of which is off

sorry this made me lol...uber complicated way of turning off sound opposed to the more sensible 'actually bothering to look' at yer settings...priceless

...just a shame the simple way doesn't work :-(

lol...i think this is a bit OCD about saving battery life!!!

EDIT: okay maybe if you're taking a pic and you don't want people to think you're a perv it's useful! So i'm doing it! How do i create a file?

Has anyone managed to get this to work for the Galaxy S2? What type of file needs to be created in /data - a folder? I tried that and it doesn't work and admin prevents me editing the ogg sound file that makes the shutter noise - is there a way to get admin rights to amend it?

On my SGS II at least, there is no shutter sound option in the camera. However, I can confirm that the first method in this post works on the Galaxy S II.

In the terminal, cd to /data then vi local.prop and add the line ro.camera.sound.forced. I don't know what other text editors there are for Android, haven't really looked into it, but vi works on everything (though admittedly it's not very user friendly, especially not on Android as pressing "Esc" is a little more awkward). Not sure but you probably need to have a rooted device for this.

The great thing about this method is that it only mutes the sounds if your phone is on silent, so you can keep them in situations where it's useful.

I don't know if you noticed, but you're listing 2 methods here - one is creating the file yourself and adding the line, the other is the potentially easier method of downloading a readily made local.prop and copying it to the relevant directory. You kinda need the attached file referenced by the copied text for that...

I just used Tasker to set the phone to silent on opening the camera app and turn off silent on exit. Simples. Tasker is amazing, well worth a little time to learn it.

Using the local.prop file is a neater approach and takes very little time to implement

You need root access. Then simply navigate to /data and create a new file called local.prop. open the file and type ro.camera.sound.forced=0 and save it. Reboot the phone and say goodbye to the shutter sounds.
Alternatively if your incapable of creating this file yourself you can use this app to do it, you'll still need a rooted phone though.

I've noticed that when you update your firmware to the latest through Samsung Kies, there is no shutter noise when your ringer volume is set to vibrate.

Yeah the Firmware update does it for you, just watch out as you can't choose a different text skin afterwards =/

A text skin is the colours and stuff on the default text app.

Easiest way is just put phone to silent when you want to take your pervy pictures....;):D

I'm a bit confused by this. I've been running 2.3.5 for a while now and my phone still makes that annoyingly loud shutter sound when taking pictures in silent mode. I've also tried Tasker but it hasn't been working for me either. :(

Probably my biggest disappointment with the SII is the camera. I'm spoilt having come from a Nokia N8 with a 12MP camera, Carl Zeiss lens and Xenon flash. Ok, I knew the SII camera wasn't as good but what surprised is the lack of full replacement camera apps. I used Camera Pro on the Nokia which had a huge range of features over the factory app including silent mode. I've found a lot of fancy camera trick apps in Market but no actual full-featured replacement camera app.

Sorry I'm new here. Where do I locate the local.prop.rar attachment?

Hi! Guys, I am please to share with you on how to set the camera shutter sound. I had the same problem, but I explore it out and find the following setting. go to "Setting" => "Sound" =>"Volume" => "System". Increase the volume, the shutter sound will work for you mobile set. Actually I don't like the sound, I set mine to silent mode. Hope this will help. Thanks

Hi! Thanks, I used to do it on 2.3.6 Gingerbread, but it does not work on 4.0.3 ICS. I have just updated to 4.0.3 and I did the same, but it does not work. Thanks any way, there is an instruction from our member below, but it's not specific, so, I want to do the same as per instruction, but I can't. if you know, please let us know a specific on how to download the program. I don't like the shutter sound of camera as well. Cheers
