: Galaxy S II bug list
llBlackenedll 05-12-2011, 10:51 AM I thought it would be useful to make a bug list, that way anyone with a specific problem can come here to see if it's common and if there's any workarounds.
Please contribute any bugs you find, preferably in the format of other bugs in this thread.
"Wi-Fi Sharing" process activated when tethering not enabled
Problem description: When using my phone earlier when connected to wifi, my battery went down very fast. Looked in the battery monitor, and it showed that the "Wi-fi sharing" process was using more power than the screen (which is unusual) - it used about 10% in half an hour. I also noticed my phone had clocked up to 1.2ghz and was getting pretty hot. I force stopped the process, and the CPU clocked back down to 200mhz.
Reproducing the problem: It appears to happen if you've enabled or configured tethering once. When it happens to me, it happens if I disable then enable wifi. It may or may not be specific to the type of wifi network you connect to.
Fixes: Root your phone and freeze "Wi-Fi sharing" in Titanium Backup (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result). This will not effect Kies air or anything, though could effect tethering. If your tethering no longer works after freezing this application, defrost it to restore tethering functionality.
Update: Most people are saying this, and another wifi drain issue, have been fixed in the latest firmware(s)
Potential issues when restoring settings from a rooted phone to a non rooted SGS II via Google
Problem description:
Reproducing the problem:
I did have a little problem here and there when I first got my SGSII. When I setup the google account, I chose to allow google to restore my settings. It is pretty cool as it restored all the apps I had with my old SGS but I suspect some of the apps I had is for the custom rom only hence I had problem everywhere with the new SGSII. I then did a factory reset and setup without the restore bit and since then I havn't had a single problem yet.
Fixes:
My phone came with XWKDD and I heard something about this firmware has fixes to the previous ones, so it might worth upgrade your firmware if you are ok with Odin :) So my suggestions to you is, do a factory reset and rebuild your phone from scratch without restoring, if problem still exists, consider a firmware update.
tiptronic 05-12-2011, 11:22 AM It appears to happen if you've enabled or configured tethering once.
My Wi-Fi sharing also shows in the usage even though I never use the tething since I got my SGSII. I did use Kies Air twice. It is on 6% at the moment while my Android OS: 40% and Display: 20%

Hm it's possible that it goes idle after a while, it happened to me while my battery was fresh off the charge so it may have been a higher proportion at the time. Either way, it's still an odd thing to happen and an unnecessary drain.
tiptronic 05-12-2011, 01:44 PM I just notice that the file name for Wi-Sharing is FileTransferServer and Wi-Fi sharing manager is FileTransferManager. I think these 2 applications are about acting your phone as a File Server, in that case it does make sense that it needs to run at background all the time in order for Kies Air or other file browser application to work.
In theroy it shouldn't need to use a lot of power unless you are constanly transfering files between computer and the phone. Is there any file backup apps running at the background like Dropbox or titanium backup to dropbox?

Nope not using anything like that. Plus Kies Air still works with it frozen, as does AllShare (as far as I can tell right now). What I haven't tried is Kies via WiFi, however someone in this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069295) thread said this happened to their Optimus 2x.
tiptronic 05-12-2011, 03:24 PM Maybe we can ask Briggs and see if he got the same problem as he had freeze/uninstall most of the bloatwares. If he has no problem then we can confirm it is one or some of the samsung apps that causing this, otherwise, it could be a gingerbread bug which should happen to all gingerbread phone.
Briggs 05-12-2011, 09:33 PM I have them frozen, Wi-Fi 1.0, wifi sharing 1.0 and wi-fi sharing manager. I think they are to do with the wifi direct ?

Just got 3774 in quadrant after freezing all 3...
Thomas 05-13-2011, 09:08 AM I hope it's the right thread.
I migrated from a Nexus One and got my phone three days ago.
Since then I had three mini crashes, i.e. signal is lost, the boot animation (S) is played, signal is restored, screen locked, takes about 10s. Roughly one mini crash per day.
The phone is not rooted, build is Gingerbread.XWKDC.
I don't find these daily mini crashes terribly disturbing but I am not really sure whether this behaviour is a feature or a bug. Any ideas?
mark22 05-13-2011, 09:27 AM I'm not getting that but mine shipped with XWKDD, have you seen the thread about the update on kies. It should automatically update the firmware to XWKE1 and may fix some of those bugs for you.

Edit: mark22 just beat me on that :)
tiptronic 05-13-2011, 10:05 PM Hey Blackened, just flashed KE2 and it looks like the FileSharing has disappeared! I will keep an eye on it and report again tomorrow :)
tiptronic 05-14-2011, 12:19 PM Guess I said it too soon, the filesharing has come back. Anyway the battery seems last longer with the new firmware and the filesharing stay under 4%.
AUS-SII 05-14-2011, 02:35 PM Hi Guys, for some reason I can not post my own thread so if a moderator can do that for me, that would be awesome (unless this is an appropriate location)
I have been having a problem with my phones location. I bought the phone from Clove in the UK and live in Melbourne, Australia.
I recently realised something which I cannot seem to fix - my phone, at times, seems to think I am in England. So far I have noticed this during two occasions.
- When I open the internet (the default one, although I tested firefox and got the same result) and search for something in the browser's top bar, the results that come up are from English sites. If I go to google.com however, they are local as it picks up my location and it is displayed on the screen. If I go to More (up top) - I am directed to google.co.uk websites.
- on the facebook application, when someone checks in to a location, the place's distance is shown in miles - not kilometers
While these are nothing major, they (especially the searching) is definitely an annoyance.
Thanks in advance for the much needed help from an Android newbie guys!
homebrandcola 05-14-2011, 04:24 PM Hi. I've had thus issue on phones bought overseas before. It isn't something I've seen on my GS2 though. Previously I have used an app called more locale 2. And specified my locale as en-AU. Link to market: http://market.android.com/details?id=jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale
I haven't used it my my GS2 but worked great on my Nexus One. I think once my Google account was recognised as being AU that transferred to my new phone.
Cheers, Tim.
homebrandcola 05-14-2011, 04:29 PM Hi everyone.
One bug I've found is M4A files are not ready correctly. They are missing their Artist field. I copied over a number of songs using DoubleTwist (just a file copy to my SD card.) No music players that use the system media library display the artist for any M4A files.
All of the files play fine though.
Yet to find another music player that builds its own library based on the files for a work around.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Tim.
Thomas 05-14-2011, 08:44 PM Thanks!
Kies tells me "This version of the device cannot be updated." I am confused.
In addition I found that some of the apps I bought are deemed incompatible by the market and hence are not allowed to be installed, they don't even show when searching the market. Examples of forbidden apps are Astro File Manager Pro or Wolfram Alpha.
I am not sure whether this is a bug at all. If so, who would have to or could address this problem: Google, Samsung, developers, The Doctor?
homebrandcola 05-15-2011, 01:13 AM Hey Blackened, just flashed KE2 and it looks like the FileSharing has disappeared! I will keep an eye on it and report again tomorrow :)
Is the update through Kies a complete wipe and install? Or is it just an update (like getting OTA updates on other Android phones)?
Tried updating through Kies yesterday, but it had an error and offered to do an Emergency Flash Recovery. Clicked Cancel, and rebooted phone. (No harm done.)
Cheers, Tim.
AUS-SII 05-15-2011, 07:43 AM I had the same problem with M4a files. From what I can tell they are not supported by the phone - but if didn't work on music players that do support it anyway.
I ended up copying my music over manually as it gave me the option to convert the files, and now they are fine.
Just hates m4a's I guess.
AUS-SII 05-15-2011, 08:02 AM btw thanks for the help! More Locale 2 worked perfectly.
Wish there was a way to do this through the settings!

Kies will not wipe any data on your phone (I know it asks if you want to do a backup but it's not necessary).
Also, doesn't most of your data sync to Google automatically anyway? The only things that don't are Music and Photos.

More worried about Apps and their data.
Thanks for the reply. I did the update today, nothing lost :-)
Cheers, Tim.
uktivo 05-17-2011, 10:40 AM Hi all, first post.
2 Bugs I've seen is to do with mail and mail notifications on the header.
1. My handset isn't deleting exchange email that I've deleted on my exchange account "unless" I actually go into the mail program. Even then it's taking a long time for the phone to register the update.
2. The notification on the header to say exchange mail has arrived, stays there even if I delete the mail in my computer. Again, unless I'm actively in the mail account of the handset.
So it seems the active sync link isn't working as it should.
I've using the stock samsung mail program.
Anybody experiencing a very very low microphone-level?
I got my phone yesterday and no one can hear me speak.
If i put the headset in, they´ll hear mr just fine, but without the headset the party describes the sound from my phone as very muffled and low, hardly hearable.
GeneralJeeb 05-18-2011, 12:30 AM Hi, had my S2 since launch and have just run into a very very strange error. I set up a variety of folders within the launcher to tidy it up a bit, when i unlocked my phone earlier, items in the folders had been removed and placed back in the launcher, or into other folders, which was extremely odd. Any ideas? I really don't want to have to factory reset my phone, spent ages customising it! Any help would be greatly appreciated
Red5hark 05-20-2011, 03:49 PM anyone else have this issue?
Start writing a fresh email- contact, subject...etc
now hit the home button once...
I get a crash in the email client...just stops with the only option being a force close popup.
if this happens on all phones then it is a massive oversight in terms of functionality.
red.
Scottie 05-20-2011, 08:13 PM My phone not all of the time but most times freezes then switches off when getting into my car I can only guess it is when connecting to bluetooth causing the problem happens at no other time
bigdogdave 05-21-2011, 08:29 AM Hi All, new user here.
I was in the middle of starting a new thread when I finally fixed the problem I was going to report. Not a big thing but very annoying. For days I had been trying to add my own tone for receiving SMS and I could only use a few standard ones that came with the phone, even with my own MP3s on the phone, they didnt appear on the list.
I found the solution on a GalaxyS1 thread on here, which was to create a Notifications folder under MyFiles/Media/Audio
After this the files appear in the list of available tones.
So go to Settings, Sound, NotificationRingtone and select a new tone. NOTHING HAPPENS. 2 days I spent messing around with this sending myself dozens of texts from another phone until I stumbled across the answer.
You have to go into MESSAGES first then hit the MENU key and then select SETTINGS. Scroll all the way to the bottom and SELECT RINGTONE. It appears that the notification that is used is coming from here and NOT the standard SETTINGS, SOUND
If it saves someone 2 days like it did me then I feel i've helped.
If on the other hand i've been a div and missed something obvious, please let me know
CHobbes 05-23-2011, 11:57 AM Hiya, have replaced my SGS II twice now - though convinced it is software bug. Max Headset volume low during a call, when playing music through the headset its fine!?? Have seen people with this same problem with phone. How do we get Samsung to recognise these bugs?
Erkki Laanemets 05-23-2011, 11:04 PM Hi
I have encountered the following issue on my SGS2: 3G connection works perfectly in the browser, but not in any of the apps. I verified that the settings correspond to those proscribed by the service provider, have tested a second SIM card, tried factory restore, upgraded to latest firmware and have repeatedly restarted - to no avail.
Phone is not rooted, and the only additional app I have installed besides those that came with the phone is the Kindle.
Has anyone else here encountered something similar?
Erkki Laanemets 05-24-2011, 11:30 AM Update: Problem solved. The root cause still lied in the faulty APN settings - I had to rename the connection type from WAP to Internet. Apparently WAP connection functions in the browser, but not in apps. Now I'm perfectly happy with the phone.
EvelynW 05-24-2011, 12:04 PM Firmware update wiped Calandar
I lost all my calendar data in the recent firmware upgrade. Why was this and how can I prevent it next time?
New to smartphones, I did as our retailer recommended - accepted the firmware offer which appeared via Kies on my computer screen and carefully followed all instructions - including back up before up grade and allowing the phone to reboot. Everything was back to previous state (all files and memos) except the diary which was blank.
Went to my Google calendar to get the data there and that was blank too.
Did the empty calendar on the newly booted Galaxy S" sync with Google and empty the calendar there too?
Could I have prevented this?
And why didnt the upgrade either include a specific warning or take a preventative measure when resetting?
O yes, the Calendar wont back up on my computer; the option is greyed out in Kies, probably because my version of Outlook is 2000 and too old
I am also having trouble posting on this Forum
bigwilk 05-30-2011, 11:52 PM Hiya, have replaced my SGS II twice now - though convinced it is software bug. Max Headset volume low during a call, when playing music through the headset its fine!?? Have seen people with this same problem with phone. How do we get Samsung to recognise these bugs?
Second this one, handsfree kit for driving is useless as I cannot hear the other person at all. Music meanwhile can go deafeningly loud if needed. I'm using iPhone headset because I can't wear in-ear phones but the supplied set has the same issue.
Also found that pressing the headset button doesn't start music playing if the phone is locked, but works fine if unlocked, or even if I just press the home key to pull up the lock screen. It'll stop music that's already playing when locked though.
Fidalgos 06-03-2011, 01:40 PM The only think I don't like (SGS II) is the lag when I refresh the app socialhub and my accounts facebook, twiter, emails. Per example...If I hit a 'like' or a 'comment ' or slide down to refresh... the lag is very annoyed...so much time until return the results!
UKLooney 06-05-2011, 10:10 AM Can't Record HD Video
Recording is fine with the stock camera app, BUT none of the other market apps I've tried can record in HD though. e.g. 'aLapRecorderHD', 'Daily Roads Voyager', etc. The market Apps seems to record OK @ 720x480 or anything below.
All of the apps I've tried produce corrupt HD video with green artefacts all over the screen. They all work OK on my Nexus1 @ both 720p & 1080p
Could anyone with a newer firmware?, try one of the above market apps?
Thanks...
Phone is O2 UK supplied, with 2.3.3, Baseband I9100XXKDJ, Build GINGERBREAD.XWKE2
leif011 07-01-2011, 06:07 PM when typing a text message, if i hold the symbol button to have full symbol control and i then click the "-" button my visual keypad will crash, i will not be able to type anything from that point until i restart the phone although i can still use the phone otherwise.
anyone got any ideas? i'm using the latest firmware version: i9100xwke1
Doomed 07-02-2011, 02:16 AM Try a different keyboard from the market and see if you have problems with that:)
My next answer will be: Try a factory reset or flashing your phone (I'll hold off on this at the moment)
pdjthe3rd 07-04-2011, 10:57 AM MS exchange bricks the phone.
What have samsung done?
InDenial 10-02-2011, 06:39 PM I have a new one. I updated to the XEU KF3 firmware a few days ago and now, when I turn off bluetooth, the vlingo client starts constantly using over 50% of my cpu. I have seen others blame this on leaving the InCar app but I don't have that app. I do however turn off bluetooth when I leave the car so I suspect it's the same problem.
