i've done some more testing and the problem appears to occur in places where the signal is weak (and unstable). if i go outside, i do not get the same issue.

I would recommend no to panic, this video seems to have been created by an Apple fanboy/employe trying to spread the idea that all smartphones have the same crapy antenna problems than the iphone 4 which is plain BS. I've used many, many different smartphones from various brands and I've never had that kind of behavior in any device. The reception on the SGS is rock solid.

i'm not sure that's true. he seems to be a journalist for this Polish telco site:

What the video failed to show, is that phone calls are not affected. Calls dont drop, calls can still be made, even if it says 0 bars.

I understand, but by no means that implies that you can rely on this guy to categorically establish that the SGS has reception/antenna issues. My advice to you is that if you truly feel there is something wrong with the reception of your phone, use your warranty and exchange for a new one. Look around these forums, there is really no one who has this issue. Thats just my advice, hope it helps.

thanks, but, until i saw this vid, i didn't realise i had an issue either. perhaps it's no biggy; after all, the bars only tell part of the story. as of yet, i've not had calls drop. all i'm saying is that this does appear to be an issue on the SGS when the signal is weak (at least for me)...and i hope that others here will test it as well. if i'm the only one, then that itself tells me i probably have a faulty device.

I've go no issues here. And yes I tired it. I would say this video is from an Apple fanboy, faulty phone and or an attempt to get publicity from all the iphone 4 death grip talk.

I noticed the same thing the day I got my phone. If I cover the whole bottom of the phone with both hands covering front and back, the bars drop by one or 2. I asked 2 of my workmates to borrow their phones and theirs did exactly the same thing (Nexus One and Desire). The reality is that this is something that affects all phones to a degree. Even my Iphone 3G did it.

Who really cares? Do I love my phone? Yes. Do I have reception issues? No. So that's the end of the issue for me. I had more dropouts with my Iphone 3G by a mile and I still loved the Iphone 3G. I use the same provider and the Samsung is great. If I had an Iphone 4 and it dropped out all the time I'd be unhappy but I don't so I don't care what problems they have

To be honest, most phone will show similar signal drop if you cover the antenna area with your hand, I have similar problem with my HTC Hero. Like someuser said, as long as I didn't miss any call which it never happen, it is not an issue to me.

My phone does something similar. I get a much better signal if I don't cover the bulge at the bottom. I haven't had any dropped calls but data speeds are definitely worse if I cover the bottom of the phone.

today I tested this whilst on a call.even tho the signal dropped to 0 bars for a second the call was unaffected.i was however on 2g.the way I see it,3g indoors is so unstable that I may just as well use 2g and save my battery.

However when I compare the signal to that of my n95, the latter is way better.

I have done the test on my SGS and I lose one or two bars at home. however, the phone has not dropped a call yet, so it is a non issue.

Iphone useers are experiaincing call cutoffs and drops off, when using the "death Grip" (someone watched too many episodes of Star Trek for that name) so that is an issue.

On another point, most modern phones have there arial at the base of the phone, to try and mitigate the scaremongering of mobile phones causing brain tumours. No evidence of phones causing health issues (at the mo.). However manufacturers like to play safe.

We could go back to the olds days when you had to pull the arial out of your phone, so it wave about by your head. I remember my first phone heating my head up quite a bit, if I was on the phone for more than five minutes.

I thought I saw my SGS do this once.. Directly after that I tried to let the signal drop again, but it wouldn't.
I can't get the signal drop consistently when I hold it "death-grip"-like. Sometimes it does go down, but when I try again, the signal goes up. Even when I try it in low reception area's.

I live in an area where my signal from orange is pretty poor, even on my old Nokia 5800 I would drop calls due to signal strength. Since having the SGS I have noticed that by holding the phone at the bottom the signal will drop from 1-2 bars to zero and if I hold it at the top I regain signal. As for dropped calls, none as of yet but they can get a bit choppy. I am not concerned with this (yet) :)

I can replicate it also however that is due to the whole hand covering the entire aerial which is located at the bottom anyway. No one will notice it as it is very uncomfortable for prolonged times. It's not natual so %99 of peole won't be effected and the other 1% are just plain weird if they told it like that.

I dont know who that guy REALLY is, but I did a test and if I hold the SGS NORMALLY, ie do not use two hands to cover the bottom of the phone, I will not lose any signal. I can lose some signal If I "suffocate" the bottom of the phone. The difference wiith the iPhone 4 (which I owned until a week ago) is that you lose calls, and you lose calls by holding the phone NORMALLY...

cheers,
Mark

I have this issue as I have said elsewhere. It is fully replicatable, and if I was an pple fanboy wouldn't I have an iPhone and not an SGS!??

To be honest I'm getting fed up with this forum already. People who for some reason don't have the problem are calling those who have actual issue's fanboys, liers or just plain wierd!.. Why? I hold my Phone 'NORMALLY' which consists of me cupping the phone at the bottom during calls the same as I have held everyone other phone.. I think the people that make phone calls by holding their phone with only the thumb and forefinger at the top are wierd! How stupid must they look.

People without the issue should just frankly sod off if they can't be helpful, and leave this discussion for people who have the same issues. I for one am changing mine because the signal is bad and I MISS lots of calls and CAN'T MAKE CALLS at home. Hopefully the new one will be better.. Then I can come back here and tell everyone who still has the problem that they are all wierd and stupid liers..

..Or maybe I'll just be helpful!

We did this at work with an iphone 4, an htc desire. a galaxy s and an iphone 3gs. the 3gs was the only one which didnt do this. All phones worked all the time though.

I confirm it happens to me as well, full 4 lines if holding it from the top, 3 lines or 2 when using "the grip of death".

I think this thread has now run its course and judging from a couple of posts some people are starting to get wound up therefore this thread is now locked.
