im reading thru the comments on gsmarena, its filled with complaints from owners saying the phone only has/recognizes 256mb ram, and also complaining about the phone lagging alot.
comments are updating every few hours, but the tone seems to be mostly unsatisfied customers..

I'm not 100% sure about that, but I think this memory limitation comes from Android 2.1, not the phone itself. There's at least one discussion topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642056
I've read something about that on russian forums a while ago, it seems that as soon as i9000 gets Android 2.2, this memory problem will be fixed (not sure about lags at all, though).

That doesn't sound too good. Also I noticed people complaining had a vodoafone version. Maybe vodafone also are to blame here. Often they customise the firmware that much that it does cause more
issues in the long run. I remember there N95 firmware was so slow compared to the unbranded n95 firmwares.
I'll have my Galaxy S on Monday so I will be able to comment on this, if its laggy or not. I really hope not!

Its been confirmed 512MB, there is no such limitation to 256MB in Android 2.1 (which is why the Nexus One and Desire also both have 512MB RAM or more onboard - slightly more for the Desire presumably because it has to run Sense on top of Android).

The Task Killer shows me after the start 176MB of free Ram. The App "Memory Booster" shows:
-Total Memory: 341MB
-Free: 183MB
-Used: 158MB

When I go into advanced task killer, it says"104M" when I have nothing running.
