Could you please describe what you are doing and what sort of error messages you are getting? Take it you have no other problems with Samsung Kies or connecting your SGS in any other modes?

I am on the Kies home page, i clicked message viewer whilst my SGS was connected. It said loading messages as though it was saving them, but once it reached 100% it went back to the screen which told em to connect my device. It wont let me access my sms through my pc. im getting no error messages though, am i doing something wrong?

In the middle of baking cakes for Charity and now my PC is saying I should connect my device to a USB2 port :( Will help once I've sorted this usb thing out.

Right, I tried using the Kies Messages App, downloaded the codec it asked me too and could not get anything to work.

On the other hand, with a quick go on google I found the following:

'The Kies can store your contacts and restore them to your phone if you need it to. It WON'T be able to restore the SMS / text messages you backed up on your PC to your phone, however. If you want to backup your SMS / text messages and the ability to restore them to your phone, you can download an app called SMS Backup+ from the market. This app will backup your SMS to a google account of your choosing, and restore it when you need it.'

Hope this helps you Wendywoo.

How do you transfer the messages back on your phone after the back up?

Why not just use an SMS backup and restore app? I'm probably missing something in your question.

I use, wait for it, SMS backup and restore. (other apps are available). Lets you backup your texts to the SD card so you can copy them to the external SD or PC etc, then restore them once you've done your business.

What am I missing? Is it something obvious? That's usually the case...
