Im on Orange in the UK and I was able to upgrade my phone to 2.2 through kies without rooting or hacking the phone. Kies updated there software then I was able to upgrade my phone. My phone is unbranded as I got it from phones 4 U. It runs good not wiped any information on my phone and I can watch flash videos no problems

I just installed it and now my phone is slow as hell, the Quadrant test I did on it was 942 which is crap. I hope they bring out a speed update soon as it is really annoying as I only just got rid of the lag from 2.1.
I thought it was only Carphone Warehouse that sold unbranded phones as I tried to buy my Galaxy S from Phones4U and they wouldn't sell me a unbranded phone as they said Orange wouldn't allow them.

My phone was heavily branded by Vodafone UK and I updated it via the kies hack last month to JM1 to get rid of the bloatware and splash screen etc. I rushed in this afternoon before going to work and updated Kies on my other pc and updated my Galaxy to JPA by accident. When I returned home after work I immediately corrected this and installed JPO over the top [using an older version of Kies] and also corrected my product code from XEE [Sweden] back to XEU [UK]

+1 ...locked to Vodafone but only got the latest Kies installed....how do I get the older version that allows the hack to work.
Could someone put a list together of files, software etc needed to debrand a Vodafone SGS.

You can get the previous version of kies (83 IIRC), although presumably any older version will work (I did it with the one before the most recent one).

Once Kies is installed, change the following registry value so kies thinks it's the newest version (BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST...right click on the Kies key (the key is the registry "folder") ->export):
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\]
"LocalVer"="1.5.3.10103.100"

After you've changed this value you can start Kies, you should see the 100 version number on Kies' little startup window.

Plug in your phone, (at this point you can try and update and see what version it's offering you, but to get JPO keep reading) leave Kies open and change the following registry values:

EDIT - the following 4 values might not be located in "DeviceDB\4"....mine were in "Device DB\1". Look through each one you have, one of them will have more value entries than the other 2 (or three). This is the key your looking for. Change the following four values for that key. [/edit]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\4]
"SoftwareRevision"="I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDXEU"
"HIDSWVER"="I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"DEVCONINFO"=""

(for the last entry, the "" basically means just delete what's there.)

Go back to Kies and try updating, you should be offered JPO....without any provider bloatware included :)

I did it this way and it took me about 20 minutes for the whole process (FW download and installation).

Tried all that...no joy...says I already have the latest update ...ah well....no harm done.

Oddly i had to create the /4 part of the registry as it wasnt there at all.

I made up this guide on Thursday and stuck it on the Vodafone Uk eforum lol

The process is really easy and I used my old version of kies to upgrade to JPO!

First of all you need to go into regedit and do some minor alterations to the registry just like when you first updated to JM1.

Do not update Kies! If you do then I think this tweak won’t work!

The Kies version I used was 1.5.0.10024_74 but I fooled it into thinking it was the latest version 

Step by step guide

1. Back up everything you wish to keep, including Apps, phone numbers, Text messages etc because were going to wipe your phone clean before we start!
2. Go to Settings – Privacy – FACTORY DATA RESET and click. Follow the prompts and then let it wipe your phone.
3. Now you have a bare naked phone again and can proceed onto the next step.
4. Open up Kies and leave running
5. Connect phone
6. Open Regedit by clicking on Start – Run – then type in regedit and press enter
7. Scroll down to Kies and look for “Localver” [see pic]
8. Change your Localver code to 1.5.3.10103.100
9. Now go to your Device DB folder and change your settings to these:
"SoftwareRevision"="I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDXEU"
"HIDSWVER"="I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"DEVCONINFO"="" Delete the writing in this box and leave blank.
10. Now go back into Kies and click “Update firmware”

This will now allow everyone who has JPA on their handset with the product code XEE to be replaced with JPO and the product code XEU which is for the UK. Once you have successfully updated then allow the phone to boot up. Once booted up you will now need to go back into your settings and change your product code to XEU. To do this open your keypad and type in *#272*YOUR IMEI# and now you will be back to having a lovely wee choice of product codes to enter. Choose XEU and install. The phone will reboot and you will now officially be on JPO with the correct product code XEU!

I hope this will be mega use to all you folks who want the unbloated version of Froyo 2.2 JPO!

Please note that by doing any update on your phone could cause it to brick itself. The guide I have written worked perfect for me however I can’t be held responsible if your phone bricks itself. To be safe always try the 3 button recovery method first before you update and also doing a factory reset first usually ensures a smooth installation of new firmware.

Sorry guys....I forgot to explain that part better. The registry key "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\4]" won't necessarily be #4....it was just what the guy at XDA had. You should have a few different ones (usually 1-3). Look in each one, one of them should have a bunch of values (including the 4 we want to change), and the other ones will have fewer and different values. For me, it was DeviceDB\1. Change the key that has those values, and it should work.

Hi Sean2476,
Followed your guide on my JM1 firmware, made a few changes and it work a treat. It has even sorted out the product code, mine was showing XEU on the phone but when connected to kies the registry would show SER, anyway all good.

Many thanks

(EDIT)Found another version of kies on web and it worked like a charm thank you both!!!

Your handset is branded so will only accept Vodafone updates. VF are currently working on their bloated version of froyo 2.2 so you will have to wait a while before its released. My handset was a heavily branded VF phone but I have since stripped it of all its branding and it's now a totally generic Galaxy S running froyo 2.2 JPO :)

Your best option is to unbrand the phone so that you only get official Samsung updates. Vodafone bloat their firmwares so best to get rid of them lol

The Orange version of JPO probably won't be ready yet but if you follow my guide above then you will be able to get the official Samsung version which will be totally free from any bloatware your carrier will have installed on it. You will need to download an older version of Kies to do the reg hack.

got my FroYo on Monday, bought phone sim-free from Carphone Warehouse back in early July. use on Vodafone network. Previous mid update caused phone to brick and go back to GeekSquad. came back in a couple of days. plugged into Kies Monday, got update Kies message, updated and then phone update proceeded straightforward :) a relief!
Now reads: PDA: 19000XXJPO
PHONE: 19000XXJPP
CSC: 19000XAJPO
BUILD INFO: 2010.10
not checked GPS accuracy in anger, but already within 20 yds of my front room!! Miles better than before!
cosmetic changes - lost my home screens [easily resolved] but kept all other settings/apps; Flash is great!
still some odd glitches, lags and black-screen moments, but appears faster in many ways....maybe next version will solve lags?
Opera Mobile 10.1 is amazingly fast, pinch to zoom, speed dial, linked bookmarks and is now my default.
Don't know if this helps anyone at all?!

Hi.
I've just followed the instructions on this thread to update to Froyo (many thanks for the help) but now I don't seem to be able to root and thus restore my backup. I've tried the one-click and the slightly more manual method of getting the update.zip file on the phone but in both cases the phone is telling me the "E:signature verification failed, Installation aborted."
Can anybody advise me what I might be doing wrong please?

I'm assuming your phone wasn't rooted in the first place? also, I was under the impression that signature issues were down to the recovery mode not allowing unsigned files. I'm thinking Goots the man with the plan can help....

Hey Yogesh,

I recently unlocked my orange locked using the method below;

I am on 2.1 Eclair though, i believe there are some problems on froyo using this method but not sure, the instructions do say to go to a JM1 ROM for it work, it worked on Orange Branded firmware fine btw.

Good luck.

Maybe not that method, think with that it has to be an eclair build (2.1)
Reason i posted that method was a few people have been having problems with orange locked handsets.
You could try the SGS unlocker app on the market, may find your codes that you need to unlock the phone.

Great to hear that you managed to unbrand your phone! By changing your product code to XEU will mean that its British and i'm sure that this reflects what is available on the Market for your phone. My product code was originally VOD (Vodafone) then I upgraded to JP6 by using the product code XEE (Sweden) then when JPO was released I changed to XEU. My handset is still sim locked and have tried apps from the market to unlock it but unfortunately 2.2 isn't supported yet. At the end of your contract your carrier is obliged to unlock your handset for free. I do this with Vodafone at the end of my contracts

Still no news on O2 bringing their upgrade out, and if the compnay is anything like the "blond" I spoke to in the O2 store on Friday they have no idea what froyo 2.2 is let alone what operating system the SGS uses!! Also spoke to them about some issues I have with my phone and all I got was a very unhelpful shoulder shrug and a " sorry I can't help you I have no idea" !!
I still wait with fingers crossed and baited breath for Froyo!!

Hi Hampe,
I did all this stuff and it worked great for me (didnt fancy the odin route - dont fancy reinstalling all the apps etc).

But now I get:
PDA: I9000xxjpo
Phone: i9000xxjpp
csc: i9000xajpo

Is this the right set of numbers? I thought I would see XEU somewhere in the above - or am I just being really thick??
Thanks!

Vodafone update works fine once the phone gets itself sorted and reorganises the files on the SD cards etc....took a good while to reboot which was a bit nerve wracking but seems worth it so far and seems to have sorted the compatibility issue i had with my 16gb external SD card.
Generally much faster but does have minor hicups if there are a lot of un-closed apps running eating up the memory.
And yes as promised the vodafone branding is gone.

Hi,

I've just followed the instructions on this thread, and while the phone seems to function without any problems, when I try to update in KIES it shows as having no CSC...

Model Name : GT-I9000
Current Version : PDA:JF3 / Phone:JF3
This device's version cannot be updated.

I'm running a version of KIES 1.5.1
The phone is unlocked but orange branded.

Have I done something glaringly obviously wrong?

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has managed to get the official update from Orange UK without rooting, hacking registry with old version of Kies or using Odin?

I had rooted my mobile but recently unrooted and done a firmware rest to factory settings in advance of Froyo finally being available.

But all I've gotten for weeks now is the same message telling me that no update is available, are we Orange users officially gonna be the last to get 2.2 or is the update being staggered out, any info, anyone?

Hey Ceejay,

Pretty sure, think that was samsungs way of combating the reg-hacks, however, XDA guys, worked round this by tricking the server to think that people were using latest version of kies but were not;

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828548

So you can either update or change a reg value.

Try the Kies reg-hack to trick the server for its version, see if you get an upgrade response.
Should work the same even if you upgrade to latest.

As regards to connecting to Kies i have a simple rule that always works.

1: connect the phone through USB first to your PC.
2: wait for the PC to fully connect and display the "My Computer\GT-I9000" window with hard-drives.
3: start Kies and when it finally loads you will find it automatically connects without bother!

I'm running XP still on my PC and Kies takes ten years to load but i've found this always works for me.

The Kies update is old news and was released a couple of weeks ago. It's good that you have the latest version of Kies, as you will need the latest version to upgrade.

If you dial *#1234# this will give the firmware version you are on, I'm taking for granted that it's these codes which determine your network provider and when you'll get the update.

I'm on JM* firmware, with Orange branded phone and Orange sim. I tried updating this morning before work but no luck. About to check the net for any updates.

Anyone with T-Mobile / Orange rather than waiting and waiting, it is more worthwhile spending an hour carefully reading and following the guide by Goots and upgrading to a clean firmware without all the branded crap. You could go down the kies patching route and get froyo unbranded for XEU, follow the last part of Goots guide for the CSC and you should be unbranded with FroYo :-P or do goots route complete;

Goots Method from Elcair to FroYo (http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/2921-How-to-use-Odin-to-upgrade-to-Froyo-from-Eclair)

Well I updated to Froyo and its a huge improvement on my old lag infested 2.1 Eclair!
Screw you Orange UK!!! :p

All the thanks to Goots for his guide to EVERYTHING!! You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar!:cool:

I know there's been a lot of reports from some who've updated and found their SGS slower than on Eclair but i've got no such complaints, the speed of Froyo is visibly faster, videos don't drop frames, installation of apps is insanely faster, no lag or delay from download to installation. The picture gallery is so speedy its practically instant! Infact data transfer between the main device and the SD card is incredibly improved to make everything so much smoother. You can also pinch to edit the homescreens very much like the HTC and LauncherPro style except ZERO LAG!!!

Skipping the Orange official update procedure means a few missing icons like the Orange Wednesdays etc but nothing I'm ever gonna cry about. The new versions of some of the apps that work only under Froyo make it worthwhile like the youtube app that's ten times better and smoother than before FLASH finally completes the internet browsing experience to make this device feel more like the state of the art mobile is should have been from initial release.

You Can still hack kies even on the latest version, you will need the kies patcher, I have put a link in help and solutions with the title "kies hacking". Or type into google and find the xda thread, the kies patcher is simple interface than will write to the registry for you and allow you to upgrade.

Not sure about what you're telling me about the reg hack still available ...

I've followed all the instructions, modified Kies to 10300.100 (and 10300.102 now), adjusted the reg keys for s/w version, product code, HidSWVer and cleared the key for devconinfo.

I have tried it at work and at home, on both pc's kies starts up and checks and says for my firmware of PDA:JF3 / Phone:JF3 / CSC:JF3 that this device cannot be ugraded.

I've upgraded my Galaxy S once previously to the current orange version of ....
I9000BVJM5/I9000ORAJM3/I9000BVJM1/I9000BVJM5
but using it looks like I'm not going any further! ... not until Orange release their next version anyway.

As I said, its OK people saying its still available but has anyone actually done it very recently or retried it within kies and it give them the option of changing the firmware without actually accepting it. I suppose you could try it even if you have already upgraded to froyo ...

Hampe

Thanks a lot for all your patience regarding the Galaxy S froyo update.

Our handset team have been working closely with Samsung regarding this update and future updates and would like to share their news with you.

Our goal is to make the update process smoother and we are working to become the only mobile operator offering FOTA (Firmware over the Air) updates for the Samsung product range. The aim was and still is to have the FOTA update available at some point today. If for reasons outwith our control we are unable to have a FOTA update process fully functioning by close of play today, then we will make the update available for download via Samsung KIES tomorrow (Dec 1st)

Ceejay, was your Orange phone simlocked before you did the upgrade? Did you do anything to unlocked and be brand it first or did you go straight in with the reg hack?

Ceejay
12-02-2010, 06:33 PM
I din't do anything to my phone other than a complete factory reset after backing up my data, no unbranding or rooting etc. My phone was Orange branded and now has Froyo without the Orange branded apps it came with like "Your Orange", "Orange Wednesdays" or the Contacts Back-up"

Apparently I've been told that some Orange branded phones had a Orange desktop theme with Orange clock etc but my mobile didn't come with any of these and I got it from an official Orange shop, there isn't even an Orange brand icon on the reverse back-panel like my previous Orange phones.

So that's all the info I can give, my phone and sim were from Orange, I backed up the data, did a factory reset and then re-applied my data to the phone to see if it would keep everything intact after a reinstall (experiment)
I then applied the reg fix, downloaded the firmware and it applied itself keeping everything that was on the phone, even the third party apps that i had downloaded before were still listed on the Market on my "Downloaded" section for me to re-download.
But naturally i took Goots advice and did another factory reset which evidently wiped that app info from the market but retained the record of the apps that I had paid for. The phone works even smoother after a factory reset and even after bloating it with a whole bunch of apps again, it still runs smoother than it did before and looks far nicer.

Hope that helps!

Hampe

I have an orange branded SGS, that used to have the orange theme/clock/etc. I updated through Kies using the reghack, and now it's a "stock" version (nothing from Orange on it). I don't think there is any way to put the orange stuff back on, and I wouldn't want to anyway. The Beautiful Widgets clock is about 50 times better.

The only thing I could see someone missing is the Samsung Apps. It got reduced from about 12 different ones to 5. Some of the games that were there are now no longer available, but I don't really play games on my cell phone (other than the console emulators) so it doesn't bother me.

I have a branded " O2 SGS " , has anybody updated to FROYO on it ??

Yeah, I know a couple of people who have updated o2 branded handsets via Kies.

There are different levels of branding with Orange, and yours sounds like the lighter version. My first Orange SGS was like this, with just a few Orange apps, but the second replacement one had the Orange Desktop and a new Orange animation on boot up. It was also simlocked. Do you know if yours is simlocked?

I want to ask a question on your upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2, if you used the registry hack, what's your ModelName?

NOTE: its a registry key in he section you have to change. On a different forum you do have to change it but I dont know if its country dependent so I thought I would ask here to be sure its a UK version that I get!

On the other forum it suggests to change it to ... "ModelName" = "GT-I9000M"
i.e. a 5th key to modify from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556

Where as mine is just .. "GT-I9000" (and yes it wont allow me to update as yet using this method)

if its not correct it WILL NOT allow the search of the servers database and terminates the connection so it does effect the operation. Can anyboy shed some light on what they have in theirs.

Cheers

Pete
P.S. I'm sorry to keep banging on about the reg hack rather than go down the odin route.
