Hey guys, I'm quite new to the forums here.

So I have a one month old Galaxy S. Recently, I am having issues with this "notification sounds" setting. I've been changing the notification sounds over and over but.. for some reason everytime I receive a message.. It's the same 'Starry night' sound.

At the moment, the sound that I picked from the setting is "Rattlesnake". Coincidentally, I just received a mail in my Gmail, and it played the Rattlesnake sound. But when somebody text me on my cell, it played the 'starry night' instead. :\

What went wrong here? Do you think the mash up of Apps in my phone is haywiring it?
It only happens to messages. I used to have handcent, but I threw it away cause I didn't quite like the hassle to have two messaging clients or such. But I don't think handcent is the culprit behind this either. I've tried restarting the phone to, but its not working at all.

thank you so much for the feed.

I think Handcent has overwrite the notification sounds. You should be able to change it under the settings in Handcent menu.

When you set the system notification ringtone in menu > settings > sound > notification ringtone, it will set the overall/ global notification sound. This will be use for all the apps that has notification and the ringtone hasn't been set. Otherwise it will use the app's selected notification ringtone.

Hope this help.

IMHO Handcent is much better than the stock application, it allows you to choose any sound, and it has very nice "quick reply" feature. Didn't you set different ringtones for email and sms?

You can actually set different notification sound for Email and SMS separately?!
How do you do that?

because normally, this is how I do it ...
Settings -> Sound and display -> Notification Ringtone
It says 'Tinkerbell' right now. But as far as I know, whenever I receive messages (SMS) it's the 'Starry night' again. 'Tinkerbell' only gives a sound to other notifications (Email).

If the issue is actually as simple as that.. there is a separate settings for SMS notification sound and another 'notification' sound, then please enlighten me step by step how to do it.
Great thanks!

Yeap. It's 'Tinkerbell' right there, but I've no idea why my SMS sound is still starry night :\

When you enter Gmail's settings, for example, there is a "select ringtone" option. Check that out.

Oh right, this separate one. Yes, I know about this.
It says 'Default ringtone' = 'Tinkerbell'

It says tinkerbell too, on my main settings (which i believe applies globally).
However, I still receive SMS(s) with the 'Starry night' sound.

Let me clarify.. So, you have Tinkerbell ringtone in SMS, Handcent SMS and email? And it still plays Starry Night when sms come?

Yeap. Except for the Handcent SMS application actually, I uninstalled it long ago because I wanted to use the main messaging program that comes with the phone.

EDIT: I just installed HandCent for testing purposes. and apparently, as I receive a text... here's the sequence..

-text arrives-
-Messaging service pops up playing ~0.2 seconds of Starry night-
-interrupted after 0.2 s by Handcent SMS playing Tinkerbell notification sound-

Hmmm... What's the issue here?

That's because you have both of them enabled. I use Handcent, so I disabled all notifications and ringtones from the stock one. Don't know why your stock sms client refuses to assign the desired ringtone..
