Just a few questions that have been bugging me since hearing about the 2.2 update. Forgive me if they are rather basic but i have only had the phone about a month...

I am on Vodafone in the UK but bought the phone from phones4u. This would make it unbranded (yay) but, therefore, not very liable to get the 2.2 update over the air. I am currently on firmware JM1 which came on the SGS out of the box. In light of this info...

1. Kies says I can update the phones firmware through it. This would obviously 'update' JM1 to some other mystically numbered thing...is this wise to do (considering i am reasonably happy with the out of the box performance except for the odd laggy patch)?

2. If the answer to 1 is 'yes' do i need to back up my apps as it does say i need to back up contacts. In other words what does a firmware update wipe and what stays?

3. The mythical Froyo update will most likely come via Keis. How will i recognise the fact its ready (assuming i am on another planet and don't see the forums explode with joy) bar keep plugging the phone in to the PC?

4. Again with the what can it wipe etc only this time re: froyo?

btw, thats SOME noob like questions, please excuse my ham fisted typing!
Thx for any answers.

You are unlikely to get any over the air updates, FroYo or otherwise :(

I'm also on JM1 and with the lagfix applied, I don't feel the need to upgrade. I will however go for FroYo when it's available officially because of the extra features it allows such as Flash in webpages and Installing Apps to the SD Card etc... You never know, the update you have been offered might work out better than JM1. Most people on here wouldn't recommend updating firmware through Kies. I have (it's how I got to JM1) and I'm probably going to try to get to FroYo that way, but there is always Odin to fall back on if needed :)

You will lose all your installed apps when you upgrade firmware, other than the default ones that come with that firmware, so basically anything you have added yourself. You should back up your contact list and calendar (unless you have them synced with your google account in which case there is no need to back up). You might also want to use Kies to back up your Memo's if you use that app. You won't lose anything off your external (removeable SD card) but I wouldn't leave any pics or anything you want to keep on the internal memory, just in case :)

Yes, you will have to keep your ear to the ground regarding the FroYo update, this forum is a good a place as any, although when you hear people shout that it is available it doesn't mean you will instantly get it. It has a lot to do with your service provider and the tweaks/addons they do before releasing it to you, but once one starts the others shouldn't be far behind - I hope.

The FroYo update will wipe pretty much everything that a normal firmware update would wipe, after all it is only a firmware update itself :)
