: Can't receive email on phone and Oullook. Email Disappears from Inbox.
paddyb 07-03-2010, 12:23 PM I'm having a problem geting my POP email to work.
What i am trying to do is set it up or i can recieve email on my Galaxy S while out, but also be able to retrieve and keep them on my PC.
What i have at the moment is that i can receive them on my phone as long as i haven't opened them in Outlook, but if i have received them on my phone first, they don't show up in Outlook. So its one or the other but not both. I have set both the phone and Outlook to leave messages on the server.
To further complicate this, once i have read them on the phone, they disappear from the inbox and seem to be lost forever.
Hope thats makes sense and that somebody can help!
tiptronic 07-03-2010, 12:31 PM If you want to view your mails in multiple places, you should set up IMAP instead of POP3. POP3 will download all the mails from the server to the mail client (pc or phone) while IMAP will stream the mails to the mail clients and still keep the mail on the server.
If your email server doesn't support IMAP, you could check the mail client (both pc and phone) settings, there should be something like "Keep a copy at the server".
Hope this help.

Thanks for your help. I've managed to get it working with imap now. I had already ticked the "leave copy of message on server" box, which i thought should have done the trick with POP3, but it didn't work.
Now i need to delete thw POP3 account on the phone, can anyone tell me how to do this?
Thanks.
tiptronic 07-03-2010, 10:13 PM Press and hold the email account should bring out a menu where you can delete the account.
paddyb 07-04-2010, 12:50 AM Just worked that one out!
I have one more question about the email. I've set it up as imap, but in Outlook you can only do it for recieving mail, sending is still SMPT. So emails sent from my phone stay on the phone and mail sent from my PC stays in Outlook, but not on both devices. Is there anyway around this?
tiptronic 07-04-2010, 07:02 AM Check if your sent email goes into a 'Sent' folder. You should be able to access the 'Sent' folder in Samsung email app. On top where the 'Inbox' tap is, you can scroll to the left to see more folders.
paddyb 07-04-2010, 12:51 PM Getting there...
Messages sent from my phone now appear in my imap Sent Items folder in Outlook, and also in my POP3 inbox, which i have to keep open as i have other POP3 accounts going into it, but no problem to delete or filter them out. Still no joy in getting mail sent through Outlook into my phone sent items. Any more ideas?
Many thanks for your help with this.
tiptronic 07-04-2010, 06:54 PM Have you set the account in Outlook using IMAP too? If not, you will not see the sent emails from the phone as POP3 is local, all sent mail will keep in local (outlook) too.
paddyb 07-05-2010, 02:33 PM I've got both the POP3 account and the IMAP account in Oulook, but when i set up the IMAP account, i only gives me the option of sending via SMTP. Would deleting the POP3 acc from Outlook make a difference? I'm a bit worried that if it do so, i'll lose all my emails?
tiptronic 07-05-2010, 03:21 PM You can easily test it is by disabling your pop3 account instead of delete it, then go check your IMAP account and make sure you got all the mails and sent items. If the sent items not appear in your IMAP account, you can drag and drop from POP3 sent folder to IMAP sent folder. Once you happy, you can go ahead remove your POP3. It is hard to test if you have both active as POP3 will try to download your mails while IMAP is trying to read it from the server. Although you have set to keep a copy to server and that should be fine, but I will do the test before I remove the POP3 in case it doesn't keep the copy :).
paddyb 07-20-2010, 09:10 PM Many thanks for your help with this.
I have set up my IMAP account using these instructions given by my service provider Virgin (but using Outlook instead of Outlook Express):
http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=3638&CURRENT_CMD=SEARCH&CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTY=us&VM_CUSTOMER_TYPE=National
I’ve been using it for about a week now, with both the stock browser and K9, as you mentioned in a previous post: http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/157-Help-please-for-email-notifications
So, I thought it might be useful to report my findings in case it’s useful for anyone else in the future.
Mail sent using the phone is in the phones Sent folder and shows up on my PC in Sent under Virgin IMAP
Mail sent using the PC does not show up in the IMAP folders, but in the old POP Sent Items. However, if I manually move them into the IMAP sent items, I can now see them on the phone and also in the IMAP folders which have now appeared in Virgin Webmail account, (which I believe is now part of Google mail).
Mail sent via Webmail is now in Gmail/Sent Mail on the phone and in Outlook IMAP.
I tried moving a folder from my old POP inbox to the IMAP inbox the see what happened. The folder appeared in my Webmail account in the IMAP folders, and I eventually found the messages on the Phone under Gmail/All Mail in K9, but not on the stock email client. They later disappeared, possibly down to no of message restrictions?
I have a Gmail account, but don’t use it, but found that it accepted Virgin address when I entered it. However, it won’t sync and reports: “sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly” (three days and counting…)
I like to look and feel of the stock email client over K9, but the Gmail sent items only display the correct “To” address in K9, in the stock client to “To” is my address.
Sometimes when refreshing email, it will systematically delete everything, and then load them all up again (only with K9 I think).
So, I can see all incoming and outgoing mail on the phone, pc and webmail (if I move my sent items in IMAP), but not all in the same place. Perhaps I’m asking too much of phone email to be able to handle all of this. Like most people, its recent incoming mail that’s important, but I do find myself looking for sent items quite regularly.
Starkey 07-28-2010, 06:19 PM Forgive me if I'm butting in off-topic, but I'm a newbie who can't find how to start a new thread.
I set up my Galaxy S AT&T Captivate phone in the shop to sync with my MS Exchange server at work. It was a snap and worked seamlessly. When I was setting up the account I was given a choice of POP3, IMAP, or Exchange. I chose Exchange and my corporate email was functioning in three minutes flat.
Now, however, when I want to set up a personal, POP3 account, I'm given only the option of an Exchange or Gmail account - no more POP3 or IMAP options. I spent an hour and a half on hold on the phone waiting for Samsung tech support to resolve the issue but no luck.
Any kind suggestions on how to get the POP3/IMAP options back on setting up a new account?
Thanks,
Starkey
