: will flashing a custom firmware prevent official updates through kies?
Novocaine88 09-23-2010, 11:43 AM Just a quick question. if I flash a custom firmware, will it prevent me from being able to update official firmware, for instance when the official 2.2 comes out, whenever that may be.
Or would I need to flash back to the official firm ware I'm currently running
Thanks.
Maybe not sure. I know flashing the betas and won't allow you to flash again to the offical one so, i would assume so but might depend on the version.
steviweavi 09-30-2010, 09:58 AM so any firmware update not done via Kies is a beta and so we won't get the official update from Samsung when they deliver Froyo 2.2?
Swipermusic 09-30-2010, 11:53 AM Well I bricked my phone when updating through Kies and had to flash it myself (to JM1). I have the new version of Kies installed and I can upload pics, contacts and messages but when I try firmware update my phone doesnt show in the update box. My husbands does, he has never messed with his so I can only assume I will have to update to froyo myself again when it ever comes out.

Does your husband have the same model as yourself?
Swipermusic 09-30-2010, 03:52 PM Mine is an unlocked vodafone upgrade and his is an unlocked O2 upgrade. The update box sees his straight away but doesnt see mine (not since Kies bricked it trying to update) it used to see it before that but always said "this version cannot be updated, was JF3)
steviweavi 10-01-2010, 11:58 AM Have you tried going back to factory settings?
Swipermusic 10-01-2010, 12:18 PM Yes all been reset but Kies just doesnt see it in the firmware upgrade box, wish I knew why.
steviweavi 10-01-2010, 01:52 PM mmm think I've mis-understood something here......if you have Kies open and you connect your pone does it get detected then? so you can access your data etc. If it doesn't then it isn't going to detect it when you try to update the firmware.
I've had a problem with Kies not detecting my phone and in the end I installed Samsung PC studio, connected the phone and selected mass storage mode. Closed the software & openned Kies it detected the phone but said it couldn't connect in that mode, disconnected the phone & reconnected, chose kies and bingo it worked!.....other than that you probably need to reflash your firmware.
Swipermusic 10-01-2010, 01:58 PM As I said in my first post I can save contacts, upload messages, pics videos and access my phone from Kies which shows my firmware and all stuff on it, but when I click upgrade firmware my phone doesnt show in the devices needing upgrade box at all. My husbands does, it shows his current firmware and says phone up to date, but mine doesnt show. So it seems to me that flashing your own firmware does stop you updating through Kies.
tiptronic 10-01-2010, 02:36 PM If you have update firmware outside Kies, chances are the firmware you flash has different Product Code. I believe Kies is using the Product Code to define which firmware you are allow download.
Here is a thread about how to change your Product Code (Root required):

Hi
Do you know what the product code for Orange UK is?......the firmware i have says my product code is I9000HKDXEU. I flashed the JM1 firmware off samfirmware.com
PDA: I9000XWJM1
Phone: I9000XXJG6
CSC: I9000OXXJG7
Since this flash i havent been able to send MMS msgs so i think this might be the reason.
Thanks
jbow71 10-09-2010, 11:59 AM Hey Maggs
I have upgraded to JPK and now my phone tells me it has a product code in the nv_data.bin of:
I9000HDKKOR
and in the bacjup.nv_data.bak of:
I9000HKDORA
If this is why the MMS have stopped working then I can understand that, not too sure if I should factory reset and upgrade through Kies to get everything back working. Have checked the links in Tiptronics post, and SGS Tools when I select the CSC menu, just comes up rejected.
In the UK by the way not Korea. :-)
jbow71 10-09-2010, 03:38 PM Just managed to change the nv_data.bin of:
I9000HDKKOR
back to ORA and reboot the phone, and MMS is still not working so must be something else wrong.
