Hi all, I have recently purchased a Galaxy S and eagerly await the release of the Froyo update.
My questions to all those experts out there are:-
1. When using Sat Nav, i.e. navigation do I incur data charges?
2. If so, how could I use the Sat Nav without incurring charges.
3. If the answer is purchase some other sat nav software/program, then which would be best one to purchase?
Your valued thoughts would be grateful.
Regards
Joe

Using the phone's built-in GPS won't cost anything, and google maps is free (they work in conjunction with each other).
Where you will get hit is with the data charges for downloading the map graphics/satellite imagery that gmaps uses.
You should be on some sort of data tariff having a smartphone, so depending on your useage you might already be covered, in which case it won't cost you anything to use the SatNav :)

Hi Goots
Thanks for your speedy reply, So lets summarise, If I use the GPS in conjunction with google maps there should be no charges for general sat nav use, if for some reason I wish to link my sat nav with the graphics/satellite imagery i.e. streetview this would incur charges, have I got that right?
Also would this be the same in places such as Spain/France?
Regards
Joe

Not quite. I'm not sure what app you're using for SatNav, but on mine the navigation app is a combination of google maps and GPS. So by default I'm using google maps which itself uses data whether you're in satellite view or streetview.
Again, it will depend on your data plan whether or not you get charged for using that data.

That's exactly what I have, unlimited internet bolt on.
GPS is free, Google Navigation is free, and Google maps is also free.
You won't get charged anything for using your SatNav.
The only people that will get charged are those who pay for data transfer (which Gmaps needs) - so if you want a completely free SatNav solution, get on a data plan like piper1 and me ;)

But please remember this will be in the UK (or what ever country you're from) only. Don't try to use it abroad unless you have a wifi connection or you're on rock star wages!
