Hi Forum,

I wanted to get a custom ROM on my SGS but I don't have a clue where to begin and how to go about it.

My phone firmaware is PDA: I9000JPJG8

1. I wanted to know if there are any nice ROM's available for my phone (according to my frimware)?

2. Can I get custom ROM's that do not require a root? (Mainly because I want to keep my warranty)

here you go:
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/91-Tutorial-How-to-debrand-and-flash-newer-firmware-to-your-Galaxy-S.

most custom roms require you to flash to a specific FW first, then flash an update.zip file that you put on your phone beforehand, the update.zip file being the custom part. some have root included, some dont.

as for custom roms for jg8, check over at xda, they probably have the most info for you there.

Thanks...i'm a mjor n00b when it comes to all this technical details and softwares and terminology :)

If I find a custom ROM for my JG8 firmware can I get it on my phone without having to flash to a specific FW first ?

Just an off-topic question: when the 2.2 Froyo will be released when we update our phones will it also update the firmware on our phones?

If you find a custom fw for jg8 you shouldnt have to reflash, because jg8 would be the specific fw that the custom rom needs.

As for 2.2, things start to get tricky. I just updated through samsungs kies software (test mode allbeit) to a beta or test froyo fw the other day from a custom rom, i had to flash back to my original stock rom to get kies to play nice with me, then it updated to the latest official (jm1), then to froyo, so my advice would be to get a copy of stock jg8 for you to flash back to when the oficial froyo comes out. ( google samfirmwares, its an unofficial site that hosts all the fws available at the moment)

Kies sucks at the best of times, if you are happy with the phones performance then id wait a few weeks for the official froyo update, and save a whole lot of mucking about with that stupid program. As soon as froyo is released, there will be custom roms made for it. You'd be spending hours in front of the computer trying to get kies to recognise your phone for a froyo update, where as if you left your fw official, it should be a 5 min process.

Thanks a lot Stockfeed. That was actually quite helpful. I think I have a better understanding of this works.

I guess I'm going to wait for the official Froyo release before I flash different software.

NOW, I would like to know would I have to root my phone in order to install custom ROM's onto it. Even if it is for the same firmware as my SGS??

No, most custom ROM come with root access. When you flash a new firmware or custom rom, it will overwrite the old one, so even if you rooted your phone, it will be unroot at that point.
