: Running I9000ADF1 - do I need to flash new firmware before I can use custom ROMs?

Hello!

I've recently rooted and backed up my stock I9000ADF1, but I was wondering whether I can go right ahead and flash a custom ROM onto there.

MCR r2 looks pretty cool, but the video tutorial that I watched suggested that I'd need to be running I9000XWJG1 for this to work properly.

I'm still very much in the noob stage at the moment, and no I've no real urge to start flashing firmware if it's not absolutely necessary; I'm more interested in getting the UI lag ironed out, etc.

Does anybody know what the score is regarding I9000ADF1 and custom ROMs?

If you want to sort out the lag you don't need a custom ROM. You can update to one of the later Samsung ROMS. You could also try the one click lag fix but I don't know how it works on ADF1.

Thanks, Phone_Guru!! I'll give that a shot.

Just to be clear though, so that I can get a better understanding of the subject: if at some time in the future I decide to use a custom ROM, would I able to throw any ROM on top of my current firmware, or might I need to flash something different?

No, not at this moment of time. If you want to use a custom Rom, you need to flash the firmware that it is based off of first :)

Ah, I see! Thanks for the info :)

I downloaded RyanZA's 'OneClick Lagfix' from the Android market, and it works just great!! My SGS is flying now :D .......although I'm still pretty shocked that Samsung didn't feel fit to unleash all this power straight out of the box (especially considering the similarity of the iPhone 4 release date).

Being as all's well at the moment, I think I'm going to wait a while and do my research until I have some legitimate reason to upgrade to a new ROM / Firmware.

Samsung Kies seems to be completely useless, so when Froyo is officially released for the SGS I might well chuck it on using Odin.

Thanks again :D
