think of it as 'administrator options' for a computer. it allows you to edit parts of your phone that are normally unaccessible, such as hidden files, adjust the processor, and some other stuff

This question gets asked so often. I'll try to explain in windows terms:

Android is an operating system.. based on linux.. so in essence, your phone is a mini computer running linux on it. In Linux (unlike windblows) you need to have SUPERUSER privledges to be able to do certain things, things that can effect your computer severly like installing or changing anything in the operating system. This is done for safety reasons. This is the reason why you don't get viruses on linux, unlike windblows. Linux will require you to be supersuser (SU).. kinda like administrator on a windows network if you will be running a code that will change anything in operating system. That is what rooting does.

Root = administrator. When you sign on to your linux computer, you are given user privledges, if you want to install something or run a code.. Linux will ask you to be root.. so you'll have to sign on as ROOT or SUPERUSER using a password.

On our galaxy.. thats what ROOTING does.. gives you superuser privledges so you can change things in the operating system that otherwise you would't be able to.

For all those here who got an android phone and are still using windows... why not look into linux a little? i switched from windows to linux about 2 yrs ago and haven't looked back. I can do anything that i need to do. Linux is not what it used to be, in last few yrs it has become very user friendly. There are 100's of different linux operating systems out there and they are free, all the software is free, all the help is free, you don't have to worry about viruses or spyware.. so so many advantages and its easy..

oh? where and how?

Any of the new distributions would have a recycle box just like windows. Give Linux Mint a try.. Its very user friendly and a great community to help if you needed any help.

Rooting bascially is the same as becoming a administrator on your computer .. simple as that

what does rooting do to your phone?

In my case the only advantage I had after rooting was to be able to take screenshots with special app. Ale the rest wasn't useful at all for me.
If you are not sure what it is just ignore it :)

You can apply a lag fix too which makes the phone run a lot quicker

I don't want to make this into a linux thread.. but gaming has come a long way too.. u can use alot of the games with WINE in linux.. but i'm not a gamer, so i wouldn't know too much about it.
