While the Galaxy S has an excellent battery life for a 4' Android device here a few tips to help increase your uptime without charging.

Turn off the automatic brightness and set it to the lowest setting. The display is the biggest power user.
Select only 2G if your not using 3G or 3.5G (network settings)
Turn off bluetooth and wifi when not in use
Turn off automatic background syncing
Don't use live wallpapers
Avoid widgets that use live updates
Make sure you close apps properly by going through the menu, hitting home doesnt close apps
You can try apps like startup auditor and autokiller to kill of running background applications.
If you really wanna go crazy use a solid black wallpaper, it wont use any LEDs at all
Some Task Managers seem to work against battery saving and consume more battery doing so ending tasks at regular intervals. Monitor these applications to see if they improve or decrease battery life.
Poor signal strength decreases battery life - Try not to leave you phone in a bag or place that might inhibit the signal strength. With low signal strenght the Galaxy S will consume a larger amount of power to maintain connection with the nearest cell tower or searching for another.

I don't think those apps affect battery life, according to OS specifications, they should be in a totally idle state when not active.

I turn off auto sync on gmail and only turn bluetooth on when needed.WIFI I leave on all the time if theres a connection where I am.The only program I do menu exit is co pilot to disable gps.I leave 3g enabled at all times.I use weather channel and beautiful widgets for weather but with geo location by network rather than gps.I never use a task manager or kill apps manually.I also use live wall papers.Doing all the above my battery life is great so android obviously manages multitasking very intelligently.Obviousy i could get more with 2g disable wifi ect but there really seems to be no need.Gmail sync seems to be the battery killer, and obviously anything that holds a gps connection.gps rapes the battery.

It seems most of the battery was taken out by cell standby.

I've got some serious problems with my phone. I got it some days ago and the battery was at 60 percent. After some hours I had, to charge it. I thought it was ok since I had played so much with it, but after I heard that some people have been able to use it much longer I thought it was weird.. after that charge I played some games on it but 4.5 hours thee battery was empty. I switched background downloading off and I removed the live wallpaper. I also turned the mobile internet off and used wifi.... After 40 minutes of checking things on the internet, playing a little paper toss, the battery is on 80 percent. WTF

for the default browser or Dolphin browser, you have to hit the hard back button, youll know if it has closed the internet if you see the 'H' or '3G' tray icon stop showing the red and green arrows. (those arrows are at the very top of your phone)

do you think something is running in the backgroud? on android its very easy to close things wrong, where they will stay active in the background, and if its an app that uses internet connection, it will kill your battery.

i can suggest 2 apps from the market that might help you, Advance Task Killer (using this is a sure bet you dont have any apps running) and APNdroid (tap it to turn all internet access on/off, a sure bet no apps or widgets are accessing the internet in the background.

I noticed that the phone itself changed the light to be little more strong.. How come?, I got the powersave widget, and it's put to the lowest light. But sometimes I notice that it has changed with 1 click. And in the setting I have automatic adjustment Off.. And after a while it was moved a bit to the right. woot?

Well, It's a big thread about this phone on flashbang (a swedish forum), and some people there told me that they had their battery running for atleast 10 hours heavy use.. :@, mine is a little better now since i switched internet off, lowest brightness, app killer... But still, I bought an expensive phone with many functions, and what are we doing? We are removing those functions to get better battery time.. We could just go buy ourselves a nokia 3310 soon.

I can't wait until I will be able to buy a new battery in sweden.. Then I can just change battery when my battery gets empty.

had the same problem with the battery life when I first got my phone...before, the battery lasted less than 1 day with minimal usage...i tried everything (changed setting ot brightness, from 3g to 2g, turned of wifi, etc) but still the same result.

what i did was go to the place where i got it and complained regarding the battery life. luckily, they changed my battery with a new one. now, it's better...my battery lasts to 2-3 days depending on the usage.

I also found this advice from another forum. Looks like there is some battery leak with using Wifi Tethering on Android 2.1

I have some advice to you regarding tethering on Android.
Once you start tethering on an Application and on Android 2.1 ONLY, the phone will start eating up your battery until you RESTART it (Restart the phone that is).
This applies even if you have stopped tethering.

Unlike IPhone, by hitting home button will not close the application, that's because Android are true multi-task platform. To close an application, either use the application's exit menu or use 'Back' button. You can also use Advanced Task Manager (download free from market) to close all the applications that is still running the background.

hey people

i found this thread trying to work out what to do with my phone's ever-diminishing battery life. when i got the phone (22june) the batt would last me a good few days (and the memory showing on task killer was nice and high), but by this past week-end i was lucky to get a day out the phone and the available memory was waaaay down. restarting the phone seemed to help, but only temporarily.

i noticed though that quite a few apps (including pre-installed ones that i didn't even use) were autostarting up at random times (not just at startup). i kept killing them but they'd be back an hour later.
i downloaded "startup auditor" from market and went through stopping everything that i didn't need. i also set task killer to autokill (on aggressive) every 1/2hr.
so far it seems to working. i'm 15hrs from unplugging and still on 82% (also got a battery meter that itself supposedly uses no resources), and that's with a few voice calls, some texting and a bit of ferreting around the phone to see what's running and what isn't. the memory also seems to be holding fairly high.

so fingers crossed...

:-)

I seem to have the same Issue with the Google Talk. I dont use it, and it doesnt appear in my Task Killer. I have just had a conversation with Samsung & you will be pleasantly suprised to hear that you need to SWITCH OFF your phone to achieve the stated standby time LMFAO. So how the fcuk do you send receive calls\txt's? seems like if you have a battery problem Samsung will try to bullshit you into hanging up and smashing your head on the nearest wall.

I own SGS for a month now... i used to have same battery issues... there is never a day that i won't charge my phone... in the office it is always connected to my laptop, and i thought this device is not for long travel (unless i have backup batt pack)... then i stumbled to this topic, i followed the tips mentioned in the very first post to this thread... i already have a task killer but it didn't help much so i did the ff:
1. i used only pure black wallpaper
2. i disabled background data sync
only these two things and believe me... there was an immediate tremendous impact!
my battery stood at 100% for 2 hours idle mode with some text messaging
and i was so excited that i had to check my batt stat almost every 30mins...
surprisingly after 6 hours (after reading all 205 rss feeds via newsrob) my batt stat was 88%
6 hours and i consumed only 12% of my battery. that is a big wow!

the next day i thought i can't live with a plain black wallpaper, it was just boring so i had to put back my "flames" wallpaper on.
whoah! after 4 hours only 6% of my battery was consumed.
that made me somehow conclude that what gave me that big improvement in my battery life is autosync + background data sync.
my theory is that even if my APN is disabled yet autosync is running in the background, it will continue to eat up power as it stays awake and keep waiting for a chance to connect. so disabling it is like sending the sniper to a holiday.

if the solution for a longer battery life is disabling all the goodies and eye candies the phone has (and the reason for me buying it in the first place), it somehow kills the pleasure of using it.
I want my phone to notify me when an important mail arrives, and I want to see nice animated background.

The solution for me: keep an extra charged battery (or two) in my wallet (you can find those very cheap on ebay) + keep an solar powered charger with me (this one also have a solar or USB charged battery that will add a few hours to the phone life). Extra cost - 20-30 pounds or so.

Yeah I agree with you Ray, does seem a shame to have to turn off a number of features to make the most out of the battery life. The battery will actually improve with time though so hopefully can keep everything on for longer :)
I recieved a new battery from Samsung for free by phoning them up and "complaining" about the battery life. They didn't ask any questions other than requesting the S/N of the phone and obviously my name and address, arrived a few days later :)

As you may know the SGS's display is made up of many individual LEDs of three colours and a Nexus One has a similar display, there were experiments a while ago with a Nexus to try and turn off LEDs of a certain colour to save battery life:

http://jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/

Anyway, bottom line was that he could double battery life by using only the red LEDs (and yes there are LED lifespan concerns but it shouldn't matter, those LEDs would be on anyway). This is probably a bit less user friendly than just having a black background but every bit of power saved helps.

I found that changing the band selection from automatic to just the ones your carrier uses, saves a lot of battery life (as your phone isn't looking for service on bands that aren't in use).

Instructions for this can be found >>Here (http://whrl.pl/RcmrkL)<<

Note: The bands listed in the post specifically refer to Australian "Optus" Provider (and Virgin Australia as they use the Optus network). You will need to find out what bands your carrier actually uses.

I just bought my SGS recently, and even when my phone was brand new the battery couldn't last very long, with battery fully charged, it would last for only around 20hours with little to moderate usage, and if it is on heavy usage it would only last around 5hours (is this normal?), i have been wondering if it is my battery problem, because i was so excited when i got my phone and i wasn't able to charge it my battery for too long during its first charging.

I have read about all the tips on how to save battery, but i would not like to switch all functions of my phone just to extend the battery life, then why would i spend so much for a phone with a black background then, i would bet a lot of us here love this phone because of the 4" super amoled screen, so if you would turn the brightness down then you wouldn't be able to appreciate the superb screen. But still i really appreciate all the tips, it would be useful when you're not using your phone, like when you're going to bed, you could turn off your wifi, bluetooth and all programs... ^_^

In my opinion, best solution about short battery life, is to get yourself some spare battery since almost all phones with superb functions have a poor battery life, but what i like most about Samsung is that, unlike apple, you could use as much spare batteries as you like.

I would like to post here something that ALL of you with new SGS phones need to know:

1. When you get your SGS and charge it for the very first time don't expect the battery to last very long. With moderate usage the first time around the battery will probably last between 15 - 36 hours. This depends on the usage of apps, internet, live wallpapers, etc.

2. Your battery life should start to improve after 2 weeks.

3. Here is a benchmark for battery life according to diffent usage

- Minimal usage (very little usage of apps, internet, WiFi and no 3G, very little calls and messaging) --> 3 days

- Moderate usage (few hours total for apps, internet, music, little 3G and WiFi, average calls and messaging) --> 2 days

- Light Heavy usage (regular internet, app usage, background sync, music, 3G, WiFi, average calls and messaging) --> 1 - 2 days

- Heavy usage (3G or WiFi always on, regular app usage and internet usage, apps running almost all the time, regular calls and heavy messaging) --> 12 - 36 hours

* These are estimates based on SGS phones that are atleast 2 weeks old and according to my personal experiences. So give the battery some time.

NOTE: If you feel that ur battery life is still crap then check ur battery stats. This is done by the following:
Menu --> Settings --> About Phone --> Battery Use
Over here u can check where most of ur bettery is being consumed

Hope this gives you new users an idea of battery life.

I haven't seen battery optimizing tips in here. I'm told that it's not necessary for these batteries, but after doing it once I found that it makes a difference in battery time. For those not familiar, it's:

Charge your phone to 100%
Use it until it's down to 0% and will no longer start
Charge it to 100% while it's still off (should take about 3 hours)
Repeat this three times.

I've done it once and found that it makes a good difference, currently on my second round. On top of that I also use Task Manager (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.rhythm.hexise.task) which is really handy. Use it for the first couple of days to tell it which apps to ignore and which ones to auto-kill, and then you never have to look at it again. I also keep the brightness on lowest, no Wi-Fi, no 3G, no GPS, no Sync. I invert the colours when reading PDF's so that the background is black (not sure if this is effective because the background doesn't look completely black to my eye). I use WallSwitch (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.kfbtech.wallswitch) which changes my background every 30 minutes to a wide range of highly colourful images (http://picasaweb.google.com/113787944510617054601/Wallpapers?authkey=Gv1sRgCJmh2Kz8j_rx0wE#). With light usage I can get 20-30 hours. Moderate about 20.

EDIT: I've semi-confirmed that a black background improves battery live dramatically.

One more thing - Daily Briefing!!!

Set the specific time for updating each app (or enable some, does everyone really check their stocks on a hourly basis?) for example 3 hours, otherwise the application updates itself every minute or so, using data and battery life. The change is noticed immediately

Since Froyo update my battery has been terrible! Now I have discovered that the email app is using about 10% of the battery all the time so that my phone goes off after about 6 hours even when I'm not using it! The only way to stop it seems to be to set the frequency which it checks for emails to 'never'. This is weird! It must be a bug, surely?

So if I go under settings and status the display stays about 92-99%, but I think the stats in settings aren't true...

Some tricks of me:
-disable auto display and put display to 25%. Its enough for games and reading and your phone still looks HD. Don't worry about videos, if you view videos your display will go to 100% brightness automatically.
- use power control widget. Looks hq and you can switch off things like bluetooth, Wifi, Sync, GPS,... with just one click. activate them when you need 'em.
- Use task managers. This tools also consume about 2-5% battery, but if you have already installed many apps this will save your life. Advanced Task Manager uses the most battery like about 5%, but it also has the possibility to kill tasks if you go idle. So you turn your screen off and ATM will kill unused apps => saves battery a lot.
- install android assistant from market. It has many useful options like ram cleaner and co. But it also shows you very concrete which app uses how much battery and is able to say if your battery life is ok. For example I noticed that my battery got destroyed already a bit (when I bought the phone the battery life status was on very good, now only on good).
- Big problem are live wallpaper in idle mode. For example I used until yesterday Flurry Live Wallpaper and it used about 5%, that was ok but the wallpaper looked very fancy. But yesterday for example I had everything turned off, excepts wifi and over night my battery went from 83% to 2%. Big shock as I found out that Flurry was on 22-25% and Pro Launcher on 11% (normally uses only 2%).... Now Flurry is gone and replaced by darkys fibre wallpaper (almost completely dark).
- Turn off 3G if not used, I use for that APN widget, uses only 0,5%. 3G is a hammer for battery! Even Wifi uses less power, so use that if you're at home
- googlemail will also rape your battery on froyo. There's a big bug, so use a custom rom or deactivate the auto update and turn off Sync if not used

In a few days I will get a new battery from UK with 1930 mAh, will try it out and report if its better than stock battery

EDIT: Forgot about it. If you have problems with connectivity use AutoPilot. If you loose your signal your phone kills your battery because its searching for signal. With autopilot your phone goes onto airplane mode if you loose completely your signal

When I first got my phone last Friday, the battery would not last a day.

I now have a black background, which I think still looks pretty cool making the widgets and stuff pop out more. I'm on gsm only mode since my version don't have the 850 band making 3G reception not as good in some areas. I think by just turning it on to gsm only and having black background made my battery last a whole lot longer.

I also used the battery till it goes to 0% and turns off then I'll fully charge it overnight. Did that a couple of times and my phone now can last about 2 days before needing to charge.

I always leave my phone turned on overnight (in silent mode, no vibrate) and it uses a LOT more battery if I turn the WiFi off.

Ah that make sense now, I have 5 gmail accounts setup on my phone and this is probably why my battery goes so fast even at night where there is no call or emails. So you reckon this is the problem from the push email protocol or the gmail app itself?

What bug is in the gmail app? Are you sure it wasn't the old version of it?

I've been using gmail right from the start and I've never had a single issue. Manually checking for mail is definitely a backwards step. Push mail is awesome.

There is no problem with the Push mail in Gmail app, I have been using it for a few weeks and it works really well. I found out that my battery goes really quick since I moved from K9 mail to Gmail. I usually keep my phone charging at night but last night I have it unplug and notice that it had used about 30% within about 10 hours. Will do the same tonight with my freshly installed Darky's rom and k-9 and see if there is any different.

It seems much better after I moved back to K9, battery went down about 15% around 10 hours instead of 30% (Gmail).

Hey Guys,

Found a good tip for better battery life but means compromising performance a little bit.

Underclocked the CPU to 700MHz and phone runs very well.

Average time under heavy use with 1GHz - 3~3.5 hours
Average time under heavy use with 700MHz - Just over 8 Hours. Dont ask me why lol

Temp is good as well - didnt go over 37C
As with 1GHz is would go to 45C +

Used cpuboost lite free from market, in use with SO Kernel 4.7.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811660) and all with stock battery, NOT 1930MAH one, although, yet to try with that.

To be honest, cant really notice all that much different from 1Ghz to 700MHz.

Hope it helps guys, Will update with normal use soon.

Average time under normal use with 1GHz - ~90 Hours
Average time under normal use with 700MHz - Just over 117 Hours.

A whole extra day of battery is always nice :-D

Going to have a play with the settings and go lower to 600MHz until i can notice degraded performance.

Will keep updating peeps. Watch this space :-P

I've read this thread in a confuzed state. You guys seem to prefer to turn off features like 3G, WiFi scanning and syncrhronizing, i.e. stuff that make SGS the great device it is meant to be. I've been told that the battery 'learns' to charge by time and since I got my SGS, I've noticed that it seems to be true. My battery lasts average about 3½ days now on each charge. Just a few weeks ago when I bought it the battery used to drain within one day.

I've also learned that using killer apps use a lot more power than apps left in an idle state.

And compared to my previous phone (Nokia E51/4-5 days per one charge), this 3½ days is by no means a bad result considering what the 'phone' can do. I suppose the battery can still improve a bit?

Of course, the battery drains fast when using the SGS for navigation or multiple several-hour playing sessions per single day, for example.

My word, a whole rather large thread on battery life and nobody has mentioned the Juice Defender App!! This is a killer app as long as you don't use MSN or Googletalk etc. The way it works is that the App shuts off Data (3G and Wifi) while your screen is locked. Then you unlock your screen and the data switches back on again. It is also set to switch on and off briefly every 15 minutes (default but can be changed to longer) so your Mail and other things that automatically sync can still get through. It's totally awesome if you aren't happy with battery life - I increased mine by around 50% :-)

Right now I'm averaging 2 days before charging on stock battery and stock everything. I got 3 days a couple times when I didn't play angry birds as much. I have been letting my battery go all the way to 0% and shut off on its own then charge it overnight and seems to be working a lot better than when I first got the phone. I'm very happy with the battery life as it's now on par with the Nokia N8 that it replaced.

However, I set my phone to gsm only and will only set it to 3g when I'm at the gym and using pandora which is usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Play a lot of angry birds and usually if the battery is about 15% left, I'll play games till phone turns off then recharge overnight lol I have black background and don't really talk much but text mostly. I guess I'm not a heavy user because my friend charges his every night.

Hi, thanks for all the tips. My battery was at 70% 3 hours after unplugging, and the phone hadn't even been switched on.

I tried some of the suggestions above, and found APN on/off to help massively. The problem was that after the background connections had been off for a while, the app had difficulty enabling them again. This could be cured by rebooting the phone, but who wants to do that every time they want to connect?

When I held down the power button to reboot, I noticed that the menu has the option "data network mode". Tapping it disables it and then when you want to reconnect, tapping it will enable it again. It has made a huge difference. I charge my phone every night, and last night the battery was still at 75% when I went to bed, with a fair bit of usage. Live wallpaper, calls, texts, angry birds, ebooks.

The other thing I did was to run the market app, tap menu and "my apps". Then I went through each one and disabled automatic updates. It was a bit tedious, and probably pointless having turned off the background connections, but now my apps aren't all trying to connect, and getting busy with my battery.

I hope my little tip helps.

James

Hello James, not much new to most people here already but good work. Taking the auto update option off is a good idea, especially for those people who download a lot from the market place.

I have some guides on a thread which I started, one of the guides is to do with Battery Usage. May be worth taking a look at if you want a couple of other pointers, most pointers should be covered in this thread tho. -----> Click Here (http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/4124-Guides-amp-Resources-Battery-life-19-Reasons-for-Launcher-Pro-Customizing-LP.....)

The menu method of disabling background connections hasn't been mentioned so far on this thread. It is quick and easy, does the same as APN on/off but does not require a reboot when connections have been disabled for a while.

I live some 8 miles from the nearest tower. Therefore, both of our cell phones are maxing out trying to stay connected and frequently lose connection. In just a few weeks, with minimal use and a little bit of navigation, the battery that came with my Galaxy S is non-rechargeable, dead. Is there a way to disable the phone from working so hard to stay connected other than turning it off? Many are the hours I don't need it connected.

Thank you

What i could suggest to you dude is turning your network mode to 2G only.

From the home screen, Tap the menu key, then settings.

Wireless & networks -> Mobile Networks - > Network Mode -> GSM only.

This will significantly increase your battery life and probably provide better reception.

Instead of a default setting where it tries to connect via 3G when it can.

Great tip from Pidz there, but be aware that your syncing service and email/mms retrieval might not work. Or anything else that requires a data connection.

Some more suggestions to look into or add to the list;

1. Download JuiceDefender - Free (/Paid) App. This bad boy has increased my battery life more then double. From a general 8-14 hours to a guaranteed 24+ hours. Well worth the 5 bucks in the long run. So many settings, everything from setting an allowed Sync Time interval for your apps to a Night-Time/Sleep function to disable everything on your phone during your set time(s) and a tonne of different schedule settings to help reduce battery usage when not needed.. Even specific controls/settings for each app.

2. Settings > Wireless & Network > Wi-Fi Settings > (Click Menu next to Home button) > Advanced - Change your Wi-Fi Sleep policy to disable When Screen Turns Off. (this may have data usage but I'm unable to test personally I do not have a limit.)

Right now I'm trying to kill my battery, it has been running for 26:19:04 (at the time of this post) with 11% battery life left.. trying to reset the microchip inside. I was told that if you completely drain your battery, keep it off while you're charging, then repeat once more you'll reset the microchip inside which will aid in ensuring your battery is holding its full capacity.

Another really good app that I saw impressive results was SetCPU. It allows the processor to throttle down to as low as 100mhz after you apply certain profiles such as screen off. You can buy it on the market or if you are a member of XDA you can download it for free from their site.

Thought I would share my experiences of Juice Defender....
I have been an SGS owner for only a couple of weeks, but having the battery go from 100% at 7.00am to dead by 9.00pm was really bugging me.
I had tried all the other tricks in this thread (black wallpaper, wifi off, gps off, no auto-refreshing widgets, dimmed screen, etc, etc) but it really didn't make a noticable difference.
But.... this morning I downloaded the free version of Juice Defender, and here we are 10 hours later and battery is still at 78% (before it would be <25% by this time of day).
I haven't tweaked any settings, just install and forget. I am very impressed with this app. Thanks to someuser for his post.
I do want to tweak a little as one email didn't arrive for an hour after it was sent, but I can live with that for the incredible boost to battery life (screen has been on max when I have been using the phone for calls, browsing and quite a lot of camera today)
Definitely going to D/L the paid version.
Anyone else having battery woes, give it a try.

Great tip from Pidz there, but be aware that your syncing service and email/mms retrieval might not work. Or anything else that requires a data connection.

2G/GSM will still use data as long as the data connection has been ticked. Only services not working with 3G will be video calling and simultaneous connection of speech and data. It will either be speech or data, but not both. And of course the transfer rate will be far less

I've heard that the new update will fix the battery life problem

It has (2.3.4) from what I've read but it's waiting on the release from Samsung or a group having a ROM out compatible with the SGSII

Tips for increasing battery life of Galaxy life are as follows :
- Close all the unnecessary background.
- Charge the battery regularly without fail.
- By keeping the screen time out low.
- By connecting to 2G network because it eats low battery

Actually, you should be very careful when buying these 'extra-big' batteries. If they are very cheap, it is quite likely their capacity is waaay below what they tell. On some occasions, a battery sold as a 1930 mAh turned out to be just 750 mAh when unwrapped. I'll post a link if I find it. The bottom line is to be very, very careful. Though they might be ultra cheap ones...

I myself have fallen into 3500 mAh one, which drains much faster than the original 1500 mAh one, after just a few week's usage... Finding a decent spare battery is quite a lottery. The one in my signature seems to be ok so far.

e: Here is one fake one: http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-accessories/41766-2000mah-andida-battery-3.html#post935080 though it's another one. This 1930/750 one is also somewhere...

If you just want to turn of sync with individual Apps, go to Menu > Settings > Accounts and Sync > "your gmail account" and remove the ticks from the ones you don't want to keep synced.

If you want to turn of syncing completely, go to Menu > Settings > Accounts and Sync and untick "Background Data" and "Auto-Sync".

i turn off auto sync on gmail and only turn bluetooth on when needed.wifi i leave on all the time if theres a connection where i am.the only program i do menu exit is co pilot to disable gps.i leave 3g enabled at all times.i use weather channel and beautiful widgets for weather but with geo location by network rather than gps.i never use a task manager or kill apps manually.i also use live wall papers.doing all the above my battery life is great so android obviously manages multitasking very intelligently.obviousy i could get more with 2g disable wifi ect but there really seems to be no need.gmail sync seems to be the battery killer, and obviously anything that holds a gps connection.gps rapes the battery.

how do you switch from gps to geo location network for apps for weather apps ???

Using your network to triangulate your position is not an either or but an added feature to give greater accuracy and you can turn on/off in your settings. GPS is the default location system.

Applications will run in the background for a while, usually if they are not used then they will be cleared...usually.

Which version of android are you on? Some ICS or Jelly Bean firmwares have an option under Menu > Settings > Developer Options > tick 'Do not keep activities' (Destroy every activity as soon as the user leaves it).

What is the problem with the apps running the background?
